Bought 2 85 Sprees, Trying to get one running
Ok Guys this is a great site and I am not new to scooters but this is my first try at fixing up some old sprees, I have two 85's I picked up for 200 together. They both have 120 miles origional and have all the bells and whistles, even the covers for the petcocks are there! I am trying to get one running first. Its tank was really rusty so I washed it out, got the petcock working properly (great advice from site!), cleaned the carb, and put a filter inline to catch the rest of the crap from the tank. My problem is I am stumped to get it running. Heres the list of what i have done and in order, got fuel to clean carb, new plug, exhaust is clear (had to remove idrt dobber nest), its truning over with a new battery fine but it wont fire. I have spark, but i think i must have severly flooded it when initially starting it and i did not know the exhaust was blocked by dirt. What should I do, a couple times its attempted to fire but every time i pull the plug its soaking wet and I have to clean and dry it off. Any hints or things to check, the auto bystarter is fucntioning per test on the battery with the leads. I have compression I am pretty sure.
Thanks guys much appreciated.

You're pretty sure you have compression?! I'd check it if i were you just to be sure, you may have compression, but it could be very low.
Re: Bought 2 85 Sprees, Trying to get one running
Specmiata99 declares:
ASSuming you've got compression (facts not in evidence, but we'll give it some doubt benefit), there's a 91.4% chance your 'ByPharter(tm) is be-*. Malfunctioning 'autochokes' (alternate name for 'ByPharters) are often to blame for overly -richening the starting mixture causing all manner of problems like this.
So - you'll want to test that ByPharter. There's an excellent article on this procedure in the 'tech-documents' section. {NOTE: factory-correct terminology: 'Bystarter.'}
The other option is to swap the ByPharter on Bike 'B' and put it on Bike 'A.' It's a simple swap out - the ByPharter's wires feature bullet connectors attached to the harness beneath the floorboard. If that gets your bike started - OILA! If it doesn't, either THAT ByPharter is also becocked or you've got another carb issue.
Either way, it's a good idea to THOROUGHLY clean that carb! I mean, disassemble, remove gaskets and soak the entire shebang in a can of carb cleaner. Clear ALL passageways with compressed air, ensuring that Little Surfer Dude (the float valve) is operating correctly.
Just some thoughts from my empty noggin.

Welcome to Spree Central, where for every ne'er-do-well like me, there are 25 others who actually know what they're talking about.every time i pull the plug its soaking wet

Re: Bought 2 85 Sprees, Trying to get one running
Plug may already be fouled. I'm with the Capt, you need to disassemble the carb completely, clean it out with carb cleaner, then blow it out with compressed air. Not your mouth or a can of dust off, but @ least 80psi of compressed air. With only 180 miles all those parts are new, preserved in all that dust.
Stuff I would add to your to do list is drain the oil tank as well. Check to see what it looks like when it comes out. If not a hunny colored I would suspect possibly a failed piston ring. Check compression before you take anything apart.
Also a new air filter will be in order. Good luck tuning

Re: Bought 2 85 Sprees, Trying to get one running
Thanks guys, tested compression, its working great and easily blows finger off of plug hole when truning over. I just tried a few times again to start it and it keeps firing 2-3 times then wont firs again till i remove the plug and dry it off. I mean this thing may totally internally floooded or something. I will try the auto bystarrter test, i tested in initially and it got really warn and exteneded so i assumed its ok. Fyi i did completely clean the carb and its working great, also fuel and spark issues are good.
Re: Bought 2 85 Sprees, Trying to get one running
Do this test. Pull off the gas line from the carburetor. A little gas should trickle out. Just what is in the line. If gas keeps pouring out and does not stop then your vacuume valve is stuck open. That will cause your carb to flood out.

Hey guys, it was the auto bystarter, um i mean byfarter, so now i got one running, and the oil pumps working i suppose as its putting out a drop of oil every 5 seconds or so. I think i will run a little premix for awhile. Thanks for the help and i will continue to help thers and seek more advice on the second, can a byfarter be fixed? wheres the cheapest to get one.
thanks

Seriously, glad you found the problem.

Sometimes they CAN be fixed, others - not so much. I recommend getting a new one but...........
CAUTION!!! Do NOT get one from that spud on eBay - the one who advertises that HE'S got the right one ($27) for your bike. Been there; done that. Fawgetaboutit!
Send an email to this guy: upsmail@yahoo.com
Guy's name is Gregg; he's the Spree carb guru. In all likelyhood he has the *proper* model (with <>10ohms resistance) for your bike.
However, be aware that the 84/85 Spree Byfarters had those bullet connectors; the 86/87 vintage use white disconnect units. Gregg might have an '86/87 Byfarter that he may want to exchange with you. SO...be SURE to snip the connectors off your Byfarter BEFORE you send him the bad one. Then, you simply solder on the old connectors IF you're exchanging for a later vintage unit. (Of course, you have the other bike's Byfarter, but you might not want to molest it.)
Good luck.

Re: Bought 2 85 Sprees, Trying to get one running
Or I know this guy his name is bradthreee and he usually has bystarters that are priced a bit cheaper than Greg and also checks ohms resistance with some dandy red contraption that has numbers on it.
I'm just saying
Or another option would be the dealer which sells them for around $50 brand new

Well hot d***, Brad! I didn't know you offered those bad boys. That's good to know. And all this time I thought you only carried brake levers in your inventory. (I know this guy his name is bradthreee and he usually has bystarters that are priced a bit cheaper than Greg

Kewel. Will do. In the meantime - Coley - Bradthree's a great parts resource and righteous Spree-litist. Highly recommended.bradthreee wrote:Aww Capt. you always make me laugh. I buy Sprees all the time so I pretty much have a little inventory set up. Not as extensive as Greg's 50 Sprees but I do have a few in the shed and in large plastic containers. Hit me up when you need the left side brake lever
