The part about 'put in a new one' is making me guess (well twice, leaving a third swing for suspense)

You can have all the topend compression in the world but it wont run if it cant pump the bottom end into the combustion chamber. I test em by pulling the plug and listening while I crank it over, should hear a pop every time it hits BDC.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

well, i was scratching my head :? for about an hour today. im choking the carb with my hand so i know its getting fuel. :D compression is fine. the tester dont lie. :D im seeing a nice spark off the plug. :D so......i pull the fan off. im looking at the key slot on the flywheel. someone forced the flywheel on over the key on the crank! it didnt shear it off, but the flywheel was almost 180 off. thats why it wouldnt fire. it was fireing on the wrong stroke. once i removed the flywheel, that key was flat, not sheared. i started with a chisel and ended up with a dremil with a tiny cut off wheel on the end of it. once i got a deep enough groove, i went back to the chisel and ended up getting it out. yep, working on scooters.......its a new surprize everyday. tomorrow....complete engine rebuild on a 86 spree. lol, i think i should lay everything out on the work bench and get my camera out to take a video. i can have a complete spree engine done in prolly 20 min. 8)

A stripped keyway can do that, sometimes it can be very obvious if it backfires out the carb.

Believe it or not I found that I had the same problem, just tighten it down as good as possible with some red loc tight. Runs like a champ.

huh?! maybe thats what my problem is. But what is that key-way you're talking about?

i just put that new 44mm bore kit in, i have compression, spark, and fuel(in the bowl atleast) When i hold the throttle WOT it will fire a lil bit. I spray WD40 into the carb from the air filter side, it'll fire a lil bit.

But i'll let the throttle go, and burn up all the WD40, and nothing, it'll pop everyonce in a while, but it will not start, i've been working on it all last night, the night before that, and from about 12 noon today, and nothing.

Any help IS SOOOO appreciated!

Greetings:

This was an interesting puzzler, CGJ. One I confess I didn't guess. The question now is How/Why did it happen?

The keyway is the slotted portion behind the mag. The mag-side of the crank will look like this, with a small little metal piece that looks like a half-moon inserted into it.

Image

So you can slide on the mag (magneto) that is cut like this.

Image

If that little halfmoon keyway piece is stripped or missing, then the position of the mag will be off in relation to its timing.
