Heres the dilemma, gotta a second 85 spree but i dont think bystarter is good, tested it but think its burned up from testing it too long? Is there a way to rebuild these, or repair them and if not why are the ones on ebay frowned upon? Are they junk or knockoffs? The local dealer can order them for 50 in 3-5 days.
thanks

Re: Bystarter woes
I don't think you'd be burning it up from testing it too long. The Honda service manuals tell users to power up directly from +12v, with no resistor. In your scooter, the bystarter has power applied anytime the engine is running. If you have observed that the bystarter needle extends after a few minutes per the honda service manual, its likely the bystarter itself is ok.
Some folks here have had the clone bystarters not perform like an OEM honda. I can dig up some references, or the impacted members may reply. I'd stay away from the clones, in preference to a used Honda bystarter, or if cost is not a constraint, a new OEM part.

(Raising Hand): I'm one. And, as I said to somebody else on this list last week, and I paraphrase:
D O N O T B U Y T H E BYFARTER CLONES FROM THAT EBAY SPUD!!!!
I paid around $30 bux for one last autumn. It tested out at 25 ohms!! No wonder it didn't work!! Instead of * at the seller I just send Clivester the unit's remains. He was interested in developing a hand choke variant and needed ByFarter corpse donations.
So.....
Either get a new HondaSan correct unit, or a working used unit from Gregg(uspsmail@yahoo.com). And - I've just learned BradThree has a few as well.
