Troubleshooting Noise On 86 Spree

Post by coolgangsta24 »

The sound is coming from the right side of the engine (the side with the alternator and muffler). It's a small metallic ticking that varies with engine speed.

I think it may have something to do with how I have the muffler hooked up. I recently took it off and replaced the small metal ring with what looked like gasket material on both sides of it. To me it sounds like that would be my culprit. I've held a screwdriver against all the bolts and parts on that side of the engine while it was running to see if there was something I forgot to tighten. The sound only changes when I touch the muffler. I've looked in the service manual and there isn't a section dedicated to muffler installation. I looked on the cylinder diagram and it wasn't there either. Is there anything else that goes in between the cylinder and the muffler besides that metal ring?

Thanks for any help!

yup that is what is making noise. Mine made the same noise but it was that little heat shield on the exhaust port just as it comes out of the engine, it has a screw missing and rattling. As far as i know i have never replaced the gasket on my spree and it is still good but i think gasket meterial will burn out. use a soft aluminum or brass or copper instead of gasket meterial.

good luck

my muffler did the same thing because there was a small plastic piece missing that goes where the heat guard connects to the muffler, so the thing was just rattling around. I pulled the heat shield off and set it on my workbench. Fine ever since.
