Only starts with starting fluid
My 86 spree will only start with starting fluid in the carb. It was my first time cleaning the carb and seems to have gone wrong. Once started with fluid the machine runs fine. Does anyone know where I may have gone wong in the carb and what to change. Choke is my asuumption but i dont know what i may have done wrong. Thanks for the help.

Hopefully one of the gurus will take note of this thread. By looking at the on line manual, your fuel system looks almost identical to my 88 and 89 Elite. These systems don't have a choke. They have a "by-starter". I'm not real sharp on diagnosing, but pull from carburetor and while cranking, feel of the tip. It is supposed to get warm. I wouldn't say hot, or at least mine didn't get hot, but noticably warm. I'm not sure I can explain how it works, but I suspect that is the area of your problem. Let's hope for one of the gurus to come along.

Clogged bystarter passage. Avoid ether, use premix in a oil can, if it wont run on just gas its probably got issues bad enough that running it is a bad idea.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.
Re: Only starts with starting fluid
well guys...it appears the noob that I am placed the choke in too far(above the notch). It works great now. Thanks alot for the help but I have one more wuestion for now. My back wheel spins pretty fast when on the stand and running and I know to adjust the idle screw but....I dnt know which screw is the idle. Any help would be appreciated.

Idle screw is the top screw, with external spring.
Re: Only starts with starting fluid
True on the older scoots, but I discovered on my recent Dio acquisition, the idle screw is inset like the air adjustment screw and the spring is not visible. It's still the upper screw on the right side, though.mousewheels wrote:Idle screw is the top screw, with external spring.
Problem solved, great. But you've still got me puzzled with your choke vocabulary. What is it that you "placed ... in too far (above the notch). It is not possible to place the bystarter in too far.

Ok, that was not stated as a rule for Honda scooters, but in context to the poster and his '86 Spree.Lunytune wrote:True on the older scoots, but I discovered on my recent Dio acquisition, the idle screw is inset like the air adjustment screw and the spring is not visible. To the original poster. The idle screw on your carb does have an external spring, Easier to ID the correct screw that way. Service manual photo below.

You're right mousewheel. The thread is about a Spree. It just caught me off guard when I tore down my Dio carb over the weekend.
I'm still confused about what he "placed ... in too far (above the notch). It is not possible to place the bystarter in too far. So what is he talking about?

thanks about the idle screw...and what I meant about the notch is that must have shoved the choke in too far because the two screws and metal thing that hold it in place werent seating correctly upon further inspection
