Sick Little Scoot -> How much cylinder scarring is too mu
I held the cylinder up to the light and there is some scarring on the wall below the exhaust port. I would guess that it's about half the depth of an "indentations" on the edge of a dime. There are probably 2 or 3 of them, each about 3/4 of an inch long.
Do you think that this means I need a new cylinder? I sure hope not! I don't want to dump a lot of money into this scooter.
Should I just put the gaskets and rings on and see if it works?

It wont work... sorry. Any scratches at all will seriously affect how a cylinder performs, it has to be super smooth at optimum. This is exactly how it went down b4 my 2nd rebuild. My scratches were too deep for even a bore.
You'll need a new (used) cylinder. you can try new piston and rings, but w/ out a bore u risk breaking them. Since you went ahead and bought the rings, don't destroy them by putting them back into that cylinder, get a diff one.
if scooter therapy has any, you can get one for $25 shipped, half the price of a bore for a working cylinder. Then figure in price of piston and rings, and hone job (real easy to do if you have the tools), and theres ur rebuild price. about $80 tops imo.

Take it to a shop to let them determine the condition of the bore; if they say run it then run it. We would really need to see it in person to diagnose it.

yeh thats true. I could be wrong. But it didn't take long for me to scratch up my cylinder, just one downhill ride and it shutoff.noiseguy wrote:Take it to a shop to let them determine the condition of the bore; if they say run it then run it. You can go to basically any type of motorcycle shop, doesn't have to be honda. Just bring your cylinder w/ u, go up to parts/service and just ask somebody there if they think the scratches are too deep or not.
Alternatively, if you have a good quality camera, you can try to take some pics and show us.

Any motorcycle shop or "small engine repair" shop should be able to handle this. Make a couple of visits with jug in hand and get prices, they will vary.

Bad news!
I took it to a shop, and they said that the scratches would rip the new ring to bits.
They want $80 canadian to bore and for a new piston.
But then, I guess the old size rings won't work, eh? So who do I get new rings from -- honda or some third party?
Someone said that scootertherapy has original cylinders for $25. I've emailed them for a quote.
