84 Spree Drive Gear Shaft

Post by christle »

I took my Spree to the shop to ask for help diagnosing my problem. I thought that I had not cleaned the carb properly since everyone here seems to point in that direction as a super common problem but I came home being told that I am probably loosing air somewhere (my hoses and oil pump O ring are fine). They guy also pressed on my oil pump and it made a slight clattering sound, not very loud. He told me to check and make sure it was inserted properly and that there was no damage to the drive gear shaft. I removed the one bolt and pulled it out. I looked at it very well and I see no evidence of wear- at all. I put it back in and needed to readjust it it a bit so I took it out. When I took it out, the drive gear shaft came out of the mating surface. I looked in the mating surface part where the drive shaft would sit and it isn't threaded inside but the shaft itself is. Is this normal? Is it supposed to just pop in and out?

The oil pump driveshaft is just a slide fit into the pump housing. The 'thread' on the shaft is actually a worm gear which drives the oil pump. Just slide the shaft back in, then check the service manual, some scooters have a procedure for bleeding the oil lines and pump.

I took apart an oil pump awhile back, here's a pic which shows the oil pump drive shaft worm, and the mating gear.
