Hey there-A question from a traitor

Post by gspreesea »

Im a traitor but at least its still a Honda-bought a little friend for my Spree; 81 Express NC50 has the turn signals and all.
Someone broke the kickstart shaft off and my neighbor(who is a wizard with small engines) welded me up a new shaft
onto the gear and we got it running. Someone had also busted up the inlet pipe and I jb welded it back together and no air leaks-
long story short we made it run after 15 years of sitting(its a Honda remember) and it ran decent.
So my question is this(we didnt have a good 6 volt battery so we hooked up a charger set to 6 volts)
Do you have to have 6 volts hooked up for these things to start? I remember my Spree started without a battery.
But I cant get this one to start without the charger hooked up. Does anyone know if the coil or cdi has to have the 6 volts to fire?
You get spark, but no start. Neighbor says you have to have 6 volts he thought and I believe him. Anyone had the same problems with an Express?

Best wishes and thanks for your knowledge.

Hi,
Hey we've been talking and working on this with you an another thread
http://www.hondaspree.net/phpBB3/viewto ... =3&t=10428

Already found you have a points ignition & posted a link to a service manual.

Something you could do to help is click the link and read the manual

--- Ok - back to your question ---
Quick answer is "It should not require a battery to start & run"
1) Found the ignition troubleshooting page. Honda's has no mention of battery as a reason .
2) Clicked and found the wiring diagram page, traced it and found no connection to battery for the ignition

Ignition Troubleshooting (From Honda Express manual)
  1. No sparks across spark plug gap
  2. Fouled plug or bridging
  3. Wet spark plug
  4. Fouled breaker points
  5. Improper ignition timing
  6. Defective ignition coil
  7. Ignition coil open or short circuited
  8. Shorted or defective condenser
Link to above troubleshooting page
http://www.mopedriders.org/html/manuals ... resssm.htm THEN CLICK on PAGE 25-1

Link to wiring diagram
Same link as above but then /CLICK on PAGE 27-1

--- Afterword ---
I don't know what's going on with starting on a trickle charger. Doesn't line up with the manual. The manual cover even says Express and Express II models (just in case you have an early ExpressII). If we don't find whan you are looking for, try over at http://www.mopedarmy.com.

Thanks for your reply, I thought that other post didnt go through when I submitted it, so thanks for the link.
I just bought a 6V and 4 amp battery and will post what happens.
I would think you shouldnt need a battery for it to start, but I can also see why it my be needed on certain set ups.
Anyway we will see when I get it going this weekend.
Im planning on converting the sealed beam to a removable 6 V bulb because this one is burned out anyway.
A little work with a dremel and some JB weld should do the trick.
