Wrong.
It cost me $50 to paint my Spree Blue/Black and clear over the top of it with Krylon Fusion paint.
3 cans Black (4 coats)
3 Cans Blue (4 coats)
4 Cans Clear (2 coats)
Back in the old days before clear coating, people appied multiple coats of hand rubbed lacquer to achieve depth, but clear coat changed all that. You don't need as many coats now, and it is the clear coat that protects the project, not the multiple coats of color. I have a number of personal friends who are professional painters to back that up. I hand rub multiple coats on gunstocks but it is a totally different issue.

Even at that, I see a lot of waste. A can will produce 20-25 square feet. How much area is there in the average scooter?

Gray Scotch pad costs $1.16 plus tax.

And Walmart has the Fusion paint for around $5.50, can't remember exact.

So a good paint job can be had for under $15.

Here's the steps a professional painter friend told me.
1. Prep (sand) with gray scotchbrite pad.
2. Wash with liquid dish soap. Once washed, be careful with oily hands. Even body oil will ruin a paint job.
3. Spray 1st coat with Adhesion Promoter.
4. Final coat with Fusion paint

We didn't discuss 2nd coat, but I guess you can. I asked at parts house about clear coat, and he said it would give it depth and serve as a protector against scratches and make it easier to buff out minor scratches.
Hey Everyone-
I just wanted to share my painting experience from yesterday which was similar to Lunytune's post above. I'm not a professional painter or even a good painter for that matter. I just wanted to make my spree look a little better than it did (old stickers on the sides, some scratches and scuffs, dirt, grime, etc), really as good as possible for as little $ as possible. I read a bunch on this forum over the past day or so - and thanks to everyone for posting about paint, etc - b/c it was a huge help for me, but I noticed that noone really posted results, which are helpful to gauge with, so hopefully this helps.

Supplies (all purchased at Lowe's):
1 can Valspar plastic primer (clear) (sku# 282394) - $6.20
1 can Valspar plastic paint (black) (sku#282385) - $4.97 (gloss finish - not by choice)
1 can Valspar clear flat interior/exterior (sku#282329) - $3.44
1 packet 320 Grit 9x11 sheet sandpaper (sku#96409) - $3.97
Total- $18.58 (before tax)

(bought 6 cans, only needed 3)

Prep/Paint:
Removed all body plastic except front fender and bottom faring. Removed all stickers. Hosed down, sprayed with hondabrite, rinsed, polished w/damp rag to remove tar, deposits, let dry.

Dry sanded all panels with 320grit until a dull finish, wiped down with a damp rag.

Taped and papered front wheel, steering column, seat and frame for overspray (too lazy to disassemble further just to take those parts off the bike).

One coat of clear plastic primer, let dry (~15min) (bottom panel has primer only, top panel has primer and one coat of black gloss)
Image

Two coats of black plastic gloss, let dry in between coats (~15min)
Image

Two coats of clear flat enamel to dull finish (I wanted flat) and protect paint.

Reassemble.

All the indoor / painting shots were taken with my cell phone camera - sorry for the low quality. Once reassembled, I took it outside the following day and used my 35mm digital for better quality.

I don't have many pics of what it looked like before, but regardless, it looks much better now than it did. I'm not sure if this paint job will last a day, a week, a year, or even through a rainstorm. But for less than $20 and about 5-6 hours (and beers) on a Saturday, it was worth it to me. If I run into any issues in the future, quality or otherwise related, I'll be sure to post them so people know how it's holding up.

On a side note, I also changed my transmission fluid yesterday and put on a new seat cover from ebay user "comboguy" which fit really well and looks much better than the old tattered original.

Next on the list is to black out the rims and repaint the rusty muffler.... as time allows ;)

Thanks to everyone - this forum rocks!

lamintdog,
Excellent job. And you proved it can be done economically. If you were so a mind to, you've got some change left over for decals or pinstripng. The Valspar is definitely cheaper than the Fusion paint. Now to see how it holds up. Shucks, in a couple of years, you may want to change colors anyway.

Thanks! I'm definitely interested in stickers... was checking out some vintage honda wings on ebay and also considering some type of pinstripe sticker.... I'll check the sticker thread and let you know. Your spree looks mint btw. Love the blacked out rims - that's next on my list!

Well if your going to be doing any changes with lighting, i suggest you go to auto zone and replace your old orgional turn signal relay to a electronic one for about $5. That will allow leds to work with regular bulbs.

Other wise if your going to do the rear turn signals in leds and fronts orgional you would need to do capastor work and a whole lot of wiring.

The BARF link provided in the begining of this post is a great process for painting metal. You wouldn't need the self etching primer for plastics. You probably wouldn't even have to prime the paint, especially if the paint is original, IMO. Only if there are some deep scratches that need filling with body putty etc. Only wash, degrease, sand (no rougher than 250ish grit) and possibly use the adhesion promoter. I'd clean/degrease again just before painting. Bada bing.

My SE50 is a different story though. The rat paint in army green by the previous owner is flaking off and I'd have to try and strip it off or sand it all the way down. But then again....all of the plastics are broken, so what does it matter anyway ? :)

Key word is "metal". The cycle boys do a great job on metal, but we're dealing with plastic almost exclusively, so the Adhesion Promoter is a must. However, if I understand Krylon's Fusion, you don't need the AP, as it is designed for plastic. However, color selection is limited. I do like the "hammered" look though. It's TUFF. Gloss is nice but hard to maintain. Gotta keep a polish rag handy. I noticed that on the new front panel I just purchased.

I actually stomped down to the library and checked out a few books on plastic repair and they all talk about using paint/primer/clear coat's with a flex agent. Fusion paint and the plastic primer I got don't seem to say anything on the can about working on flexible parts. Flex agents have been mentioned in other posts, but the posts never say which exact paints to use or where to get them, so I thought I'd pass this along. "SEM" seems to be the brand that makes all the flexible paint for plastic. You can google the brands for price shopping, but this site seems to have the widest selection. (TCP Global)

Heres what I'm considering using:

Adhesion Promoter:
http://www.tcpglobal.com/autobodydepot/ ... EM%2039863

High Build Flexible Primer:
http://www.tcpglobal.com/spraypaintdepo ... =SEM+42043

Silver Flexible Paint(They also have about 2 dozen other colors)
http://www.tcpglobal.com/spraypaintdepo ... =SEM+15083

Flexible Clear Coat:
http://www.tcpglobal.com/spraypaintdepo ... =SEM+13003

(fyi- some of the colors in the pictures don't match up with the product titles for some reason)

So....getting all this (1 can adhesion, 2 cans primer, 3 cans color, 2 cans clear) would come to almost $100, but would probably look amazing and last forever. Probably.
Regardless of what quality paint I use I definitely want to go adhesion, primer, paint and clear coat.

I'm putting this out to the group...

Have you painted your scoot with cheap stuff more than 1-2 yrs ago and had it still look good/not crack? If so what did you use?

Are there some layers that are vital to have flex more than others? Maybe just the flex color? Or just flex clear coat to seal it in?
