Got it going! 70CC and Variator!

Post by the496rocket »

I worked last night till 12:00 Installing the 70cc kit and speed variator and jet on my aero 50. Well I got home from work today and finished up a few things I had to do yet, I hit the starter and it fired right up within 1 second and ran perfect. Sounded really deep and throaty too. I let it idle for a while, and took it for a spin. All I can say is WOW!!! This thing takes off like a rocked. at least 3 times as fast as before with the old engine! I am really inpressed. I didnt top it out, cause the book says to break it in for 300 miles before driving normal, but I hit 39 and it was still climbing fast but I let off. I cant wait till I get it broke in and see what she'll do. Its funny, going 35, the engine sounds as if it is doing 15, cause the rpms are so much lower. I am also going to put some better springs in the clutch. Too bad the bike looks like shizz cause I have none of the panels painted and on the bike yet, but what it does have on is all painted and clean :D

I have some questions though. I am sure that the fuel/air screw will have to be set different now, but when I first hit the gas, it spits a bit, then flies, and if I am at about half throttle, and slam it to full, it burps a bit then flies. I am sure this is a carb adjustment, but I dont know what.

Also one of the long lower hoses on the carb is dripping gas, I am not sure what one, but I completly cleaned the carb too, and this is the carb off my other aero, which never leaked gas. Is it leaking because my fuel valve/shutoff is broke, or a problem in the carb? if so how do I go about fixin it? it sux cause the gas eats at the brand new paint on the case. :x

Thanks For all your guys help. I really appreatiate it.

Contact Steve at vtcycles.com for guidance on jetting. You're probably running a bit lean. Also check your slide needle position; you may want to move it up.

If its dripping gas from the bowl overflow you either have crud in the float valve seat or need a new float valve. Clean carb and install inline fuel filter. If that doesn't fix it replace the valve.

Ok

Post by the496rocket »

Yeah, it seemed like it would be lean, I put in a pretty big jet for the larger cylinder and I also opened the intake ports up, It seems like once it gets up to about 35-40 it needs more fuel, I know it will rev a lot higher, but it acts like it doesnt want to. Would the air/fuel screw need to be turned out more? it is at stock now, 1 1/4 turns out.

How do I check the condition of my float valve?

You're either running lean at the top end and need a larger jet, or you need a larger carb. Darat's is running with a stock carb. Compare notes with him. He's still running a bit lean, but in the OK range for temp.

If you can't fix it with cleaning the shutoff valve just replace it. Damage is not alway obvious.

jet

Post by the496rocket »

I think the jet I have in it is a 95. He sent me an 85 and 95 and I think I put in the larger of the 2. How can I tell if it is running lean? and is there any way to give it more fuel? I have access to an infrared temp gun, So i can check the temp f you know what it should be at.

rich

Post by the496rocket »

I found out tonight it was running rich, quite a bit actually, I let it tdle for 10 min (help break it in) and got it to operating temp, and put it up on the stand, and gave it gas, It got to the rpms where it would seem to want to quit on the road, and started to sputter and wouldnt go any faster or rev any more. I removed the airbox, tried it again, and holy crap! it flew right up in rpms and screamed, I wasnt even full throttle and I let off. So it was going about 38 yesterday with the air box on and still climbing, but not very many rpms. So Tomorrow I cant wait to see what it'll do with the air box off. I guess that jet was big. I am planning on getting a cone filter for it rather than smaller jet, (why decrease power?)

Does anyone know where I can get a cone filter? The guy I got my bore kit from has one for $20, pretty reasonable, just wondering if there is a k&n that'll fit it.

you need to go to stiffer clutch springs and rear center spring, the engine needs to rev off the line so it hits its power band, all this must be done at the same time, i would go with polini green clutch springs & daytona red center spring, this combo will handle the heat without fading, you still need those rare 8 to 1 gears or your engine will have a soft sieze.

Ok

Ok, where can I get those parts at? Especially the different gearing? I can also install a tach if it is needed. Do you know what the stock ratio is?

for the clutch parts you can try www.badmotorscooterparts.com they don't make the gears anymore your stock ratio is 12 to 1 i have the last set aside for another person that blew his engine, you want a temp guage cuz the aero engine runs hot, poor fan & metal shroud suck! also stock carb will not feed enough fuel at full throttle i used a 19mm delarto with intake adaptor & triple reeds from an 89 elite, it ran 65 mph back then but i run much faster now with sa-50p engine, THE DIO RULES!!!

The RC2540 K&N Pod fits. Emgo's are available cheaper at MC shop.

Check your plug to determine your running condition, or install instrumentation. It does sound like you're running rich.

temp

Post by the496rocket »

where can I go about getting a temp guage? or are you talking about a temp gun? Also will the engine run cooler if I remove the shroud around the cylinder? I can also get a better fan if that will help.

I guess I am out of luck when it comes to gearing though huh?

One of you should contact Steve at vtcycles.com and get this sorted. It sounds like an undersized carbe, which would certainly make sense to me given that you've increased the displacement by 40%
