a slightly loose belt will only increase your launch rpm, as far as i know...

in the ruckus world some aftewrmarket variators leave the belt a lil slacky when the pulley is open (at launch) this just makes for a quicker takeoff. kinda works like heavier shoe springs in the clutch.

Well I just scored a stock ruckus variator from eBay for $28 shipped. I'll let you know the results on my stock aero 50 once I get in installed.

I recently bought some 7g roller weights to replace my flat stock ones and I think I went too light. It revs higher but low end power isn't there. Maybe they will work better in the ruckus variator?

i have a set of 9g weights in a KN ruck/met variator and they seem to be a lil light for my set up.

i kinda went off the deep end w/ my aero and made it my "race bike"

I stripped all the un-needed wiring, added the ruck variator, a posh high output coil ,chopped the plastics a lil ,cut the seat foam down some ,swapped the stock bars for a BMX stem and some renthals and of course a polini BIG bore kit i picked up from battlescooter. heres how she sits now

had to make room for the fat rear tire/wheel and the extention that is in the works. btw they were pretty * plastics to start with, they had more than their share of gouges and scrapes.

Well I got my ruckus variator installed last night. I'm hitting an honest 40 via gps on a speed run in front of my house. It should be good for a few more mph on a longer road.

I had to shave a little off the outside of the variator to clear the starter but it fits nice now. I'm gonna throw in some heavier rollers and see if that helps any. I'm running some stock ruckus weights I have no idea how many grams they are.

That Sharpie trick is a good idea. I wonder if the length of the belt is the limiting factor here. As it rides up the drive face, the driven pulley loop reaches bottom and can go no farther, ya know? A worn belt might actually work better. I'd be concerned that a new 15.5mm belt might be under high tension and be at risk of breaking as a result.

A longer belt would present a new set of issues at take-off - it wouldn't get all the way down toward center on the drive face, but the extra length would allow it to ride all the way at the edge of the 5mm bigger drive face at speed...

Keep us posted?

ive had no problems w/ belt width at all. you dont need to go any longer because most of these variated motors are allways fighting the rear pully spring with the variator (meaning they rarely bottom out or run out of space for compression , except for in very exterme cases)if they did you would see wear on the coils of the spring where they would rub . ive never seen a variated drive "strech" a belt. ive seen a few brake but only at 3500 - 4500 miles or so. at that point the failure was strictly cause by wear.

2 cents

oh .. and another tip as far as weights go. stay closer to the weight of your STOCK rollers for your bike. i ve found that these 2 smokes like there weights a lil on the heftier side.

[quote="RedRucker"]Hi there,

Im noob here but not exactly noobie to scooter tunning. any how i was lucky enough to find an areo 50 for sale locally. i went to have a look at it and found it was in decent shape for a 22 year old scoot. the guy i bought it from sold it to me for a little over $100, due to its "electrical problems" (dead battery & either the start switch or the relay/solinoid are bad). any how.... ive been messing w/ my honda ruckus for some time now and had a few spare stock and aftermarket varis laying around and a box 'o weights you wouldnt belive, so out came the mesuring tools :D . here is what i found. the ruck/met varis will work on an areo. you will need the vari , the backplate for the vari in question (some use a stock ruck/ met backplate) the drive shaft adapter (drive boss?) from the areo. with the KN vari i have in it now i can do about 45 on flats and push 50 with a slight downgrade (45 is pretty scetchy on 2.75 tires  .)

i noticed that even a stock ruck /met vari has longer ramps that dont terminate at the top , they just make a smooth transition all the way to the top. this would prob also lead to high top speed.
**************************************************************
"the drive shaft adapter (drive boss?) from the areo."

just where is it that this part comes from and goes in the conversion?
i keep seeing where the crank is a different diameter between the Aero and Ruck and am still unclear how to overcome the portion of the equation- other that spending money at a machine shop which will really hurt the
pocketbook.

first of all what year is your aero?

if it is a variated model year it will have the drive boss (drive shaft adapter) as the stock part.

if you have a non- variated model you will not beable to install a variator to my knowledge (please correct me and direct me to a thread if im wrong... ive taken on a buddys spree as a pet project and im not too sure how far you can go with the spree drive)

Greetings:

All the Aero50 models were equipped with varios. This thread is about upgrading the device to a reportedly higher-performance Ruckus unit.

You shouldn't text while riding, especially on a curve.:)
