newbie spree tune up 1985 spree

Post by fenderworks »

hey guys

i just read the thread below this about bystarter hole plugged thing.

thought i would post my problems here.

85 spree
first off:

1) where is the idle jet?
i have cleaned carb, all holes blown out, bike starts everytime
but have i missed the idle jet, i have a manuel- but i see no idle jet area

but here is what happens::

starts, idles regular, then real slow, then regular, then idles high, then real low, then real high, then regular........ans so on then is finally will stall on a low idle time

new battery, good gas flow, good oil flow, good spark

am i missing something

steve

so can some one help me out

85 spree

Post by fenderworks »

ok here is what i did

as i saw in another post

i removed the auto bystarter, and plugged the hole with good old DUCT TAPE the spree runs better that ever, it started immediatly, i set the throttle stop screw to adjust the idle speed....it runs pretty good!!!!

so now my question is:

what is the auto bystarter, what does it do , why is it there?

i am really lacking on bottom end pulling power, but once it hits 10 mph it runs good. i cannot set the air screw, because it does nothing, all the way out or all the way in makes no difference

i check the ohm resistance on the auto bystarter it was 8, but is this possibly a broken part?

it seems to be running rich, but i cannot adjust as per above

what do you guys think???

well I think i am in teh same boat as you, but i do know how to adjust it if its running too rich or too lean. You take teh pin out of the throttle end the connects to the carb and it has adjustments on it go leaner or richer. I'm not sure of teh adjustments on an 85 but on my 86 its got 3 uppermost - leaner, middle - normal, lowermost - richer

the auto bystarter is the choke it closes when the throttle is closed. and opens when the throttle is open.

Based on your description, your idle jet's still plugged. Go back and reclean it. It's the long tube next to the main jet, inside the bowl.

Blowing out jets

Post by Buddy »

Make sure you don't lose your grip if you're blowing it out with compressed air. Mine flew out of my fingers. Something like that could add a few hours to a quick repair. Luckily, it didn't fly too far.

soaking might be a good idea, should loosen some stuff up. then use fishing line and see if you can poke it through the jets.

needles are too big to fit through there.
