the problem is that the engine is getting compression, but not enough. i think i may need new rings, due to the fact that i can wiggle the piston about 1 mm when the head gasket is off. first, is it the rings, and second, where can i find the correct rings. thanks much

I'd check the compression with a gauge, but given that you can move the piston that's probably the issue.
Take the cylinder with you and have it measured at the dealership. If it's too enlarged you may need a new piston and bore the cylinder. In that case you may want to look around for a matched used piston/bore set. New is better but more expensive.
