Replacing throttle cable on '87 spree?

Post by jfed1988 »

ok so i took apart the carb for cleaning and i noticed the bystarter was cracked so i ordered a new bystarter and installed it. I also noticed there was something wrong with the throttle cable, it needs to be replaced. when i looked in the manual it says that the carburetor cap is an important part on the spree and removing it would cause damage on an '87. how do i put in the new throttle cable without removing the carburetor cap? im a little confused.

Can you describe what was wrong w/the throttle cable? You may have just misaligned it when screwing it on again.

Those caps are a PITA (pain in the *) to take off of the throttle cable! I'm not sure if a brand new one comes with one or not. But what I do know is that the dealer often sells a special cable lubricant called Dr. Slide which has worked wonders for me. If the cable is completely "frozen" I would recommend purchasing a good used cable with cap already on it. Any year Spree will fit. I also have a cable if needed.

Greetings:

The cable is held to the cap by a small spring-steel circlip that fits into a groove on both components. You can see the ring down from the topside if you pull the cable away from the side into which you're looking. I managed to remove my SR cap by working my way around with teeny-tiny picks, pushing the ring toward center. On my Aero cable nothing I tried worked until I cut the cap lengthwise. On my DJ-1 the cap popped off with a firm pull. Luck plays a part in this.

the throttle is all play, no resistance at all. I tried adjusting the cable to get rid of all the extra play and i couldnt get it to twist. New throttle cable in order?

To me it sounds like the spring in the throttle slide is toast. Thats where the reistance comes from :naughty:

It could also be that the cable somehow froze at WOT. That happened to my aero.

Does it start as is?
