No power until about 20mph... then no problems
Hey guys, hoping you can help me with this problem. I recently lost nearly all power from 0-20mph requiring me to kick off and push until I hit about 20mph, then all the power kicks back in and everything is fine. It sounds very rough for those first 20mph, and I have no idea what's causing it. Years ago I put in a sport pulley/clutch, drilled out the exhaust and airbox, and installed a bigger fuel jet needle.
I appreciate any help,
Tyler

Can you give us some more information? What happened leading up to this loss of power?razzamatazm wrote:No, it is an elite50s
A few rules for fixing a scoot:
1. clean the carb
2. don't talk about cleaning the carb
3. replace spark plug
This can rule some things out.

Re: No power until about 20mph... then no problems
I plan on cleaning the carb tonight if it's still light out when I get home (but I won't talk about that here).
Leading up to the problem, I noticed that after decelerating, it seemed to take longer then normal to kick back up to full speed. Other then that, I've had really no problems besides a flat tire. I also recently changed the gear oil to 10w40 valvoline after the problem started as a possible troubleshooting measure.
Once again, I appreciate the help...

Re: No power until about 20mph... then no problems
I suspect a worn belt and/or clutch pads. If the motor is running but it is not spinning the rear wheel as fast as normal, either the belt is slipping or the clutch pads are slipping against the bell. Mine made an awful noise when this was happening.

After cleaning the carb thoroughly (not going to talk about this) I've found myself believing CharlotteSpreeRider to be on to something. The engine runs much nicer now, but still makes a lot of noise and bogs down when trying to get it going from 0-20... then it picks right up around 20 - 45.CharlotteSpreeRider wrote:I suspect a worn belt and/or clutch pads. Around what difficulty level is changing the belt / clutch pads? I'm fairly mechanically inclined, and was able to do the carb relatively easy. I don't have a ton of tools however...
Also, anyone around Los Angeles wanna help a brother out? I'll buy the beers

sounds like the rollers are worn or the rear center spring is worn. When was the last time you changed the rollers?
Nothing like getting stroked!

Re: No power until about 20mph... then no problems
I haven't changed the rollers since I upgraded the pulley about 2-3000 miles ago... It's been about 6-8 years since I did that...

Can anyone point me towards a guide for changing out the belt / clutch? I'm having trouble finding anything.
Thanks so much for the help!

Just take the covers off (covers with the kick start arm). The belt, variator, rollers, and clutch are all back there. you just gotta improvise and hold the pulleys with whatever you have that will keep them from turning (i use my huge channel locks) to take the nuts off. 2 nuts
1 in the front, 1 in the rear.

clutch pads are behind that clutch bell, then you need to take clutch nut off (39mm and be careful, center spring is loaded), remove the clutch and replace pads. pad fasteners face pulleys. Understand? Start out with removing covers and inspect.

Re: No power until about 20mph... then no problems
I'm having some trouble getting the second cover off... the one around the kickstand... it seems solidly bolted to something even though it looks as if I've taken off all the bolts. Also, it looks like I'm going to need a new gasket for the first (rear-most) cover as the rubber WILL NOT go back on the metal evenly.
Question: Are there some secret bolts I'm missing? I did take off the kickstand...

No need to take off kickstand. In fact you will probably want it to keep it on to hold up the bike.razzamatazm wrote:I'm having some trouble getting the second cover off... the one around the kickstand... it seems solidly bolted to something even though it looks as if I've taken off all the bolts. No secret bolts, follow the rim of the cover and you'll catch them all. If they are all off, give it a tap tap tapper-oo with your ratchet and that might help loosen it up.
