Right, right. I was a little surprised when you said that.
The first time i took mine off, it was probably the first time it had come off in a decade or so, i'm sure. Took a little love.
If you have a brass hammer, could help loosen it with some light rapping.
OK! Got the clutch off, but I'm having issues getting the bolt off the gear connected to the engine... I can't turn it without turning the engine... Do I even need to get back there to check the roller bearings? I'm about to run up to autozone to get a bigger socket wrench for the 39mm socket, and then I'm not sure what I'm looking for in terms of damage... will it be obvious?
The clutch pads look contaminated or got too hot and are now burnt/glazed which neither one is good. Could just be the picture? Can you use a screwdriver to pivot each arm out to make sure they are moving smoothly? How does your clutch bell look? Does it look like it got too hot? I put the 39mm nut in a vise and turn assembly with big channel locks to loosen it then set it on the ground with 1 knee and 1 hand on it and remove the nut the rest of the way by hand.

They do move with a screwdriver, however I wouldn't say it's easy... but that may be do to the spring tension. I don't have a vice on hand so I may need to go to a shop somewhere. I'm attaching some pictures of the bell, there is some material in there that looks like rubber or oil gunk? Finally, I bought a belt recommended on these forums, the Gates 7240, however it's not as wide as the old belt. Will this be a problem?
I also noticed that there is quite a bit of black (sortof powderish / greasy) stuff inside the case. I'm not sure if this stuff just builds up over time or what but could this have contributed to the problem?

That is probably dust from your belt and/or clutch pads.
The pads look just fine, as does the build up in the bell. Get some simple green and clean bell and gently make sure pads are clean of dust. Don't get grease on the pads - it is a tough problem to fix.
So once I clean the pads and the bell, should it run normally? Is that the problem? Also, if you know anything about the belt width I'd appreciate your insight.
Also- Is anyone here from LA - a set of seasoned eyes would do untold wonders... I'm trying but it's difficult with the basic understanding that I have.
I disagree,
The bell is blue which is a sign to change it out. I would purchase a whole new clutch rather than using what you have. Those pads look burnt from overheating.
This is why there is no power to 20mph. It's taking that clutch to long to engage because its wore out.
Any ideas as to how this could have happened? I have a little over 4000 miles on the scoot. Also, does anyone know where I can get a full clutch assembly?
That's why i asked about bell, yes it was overheated. Been there done that. Not sure of cause and you might find used parts or you'll have to get from dealer. Post a "wanted" in for sale/wanted.

A blue color is present when the bell has heated up and changed the strength of the metal . This is a good indication that the coating on the inside of the bell is no longer effective. New pads will not work well with a worn bell.
All clutch manufactures recommend replacement when this occurs.
