Man, that's great, Sanjuro! Which HRC tach did you buy; the one that I have (2004 NSR50R racing version) or... The JDM version for the street legal NSR50? -I'm guessing since you said "HRC" you bought the same one I have.j

I bought the 2004 HRC one (same as yours) and picked up a cable at the same time. Didn't want to poach any of your spares unless it was absolutely necessary.

You're right, I do want to wire it up so I can ditch the stock speedo/gauge cluster and just go tach.

My bike is doing this weird thing when I switch from 1st to 2nd. As-soon-as I depress the shifter the engine starts to load up, which makes a very abrupt change up from 1st to 2nd. Doesn't really happen any other time. Any theories?

-my immediate thought when you said "the engine loads up," is possibly the clutch cable is too loose; you are not getting a full "pull" on the cable causing the clutch to not be fully disengaged causing the gear change to be "abrupt"

When you say "the engine loads up" are you saying it feels like there's a load or resistance on the engine, or the engine "loads up" as in gets really rich and sloppy running?

And this happens when you have the clutch disengaged (lever pulled) and you are going from 1st to 2nd... -the 1st to 2nd gear change on most bikes kinda feels more dramatic than switching to the upper gears. I've heard some guys do not even use their clutch on the upper 3rd-6th gears... I would NEVER do this myself! Haha!

Check to see if there is any slack or play in your clutch cable. If so, adjust it do it has more tension- this will fully disengage the clutch.

Let me know the results- we will figure this out... Its something simple.

I'll check the cable tomorrow. When I say it 'loads' up, I mean the engine sounds like it is revving higher, so when I switch to second gear the rpms are higher than they should be for a smooth transition.

Jon, you were spot on. I just had to tighten up the fasteners holding the clutch cable.

Man, I'm so tempted to do away with the stock carb and get a PE or TM setup. That will have to wait for a bit until the break-in is complete. I have to say the engine is still factory tight. I'll add the oil like you suggested.

Getting the DID roller chain installed tomorrow. The original one is all waxed over.

Yeah dude, thru seeing your other builds, I personally can't see how you have not "began the process" yet!

Both carbs you mentioned are great performing carbs. I opted for the PE24 for 2 main reasons... Because I have a load of Keihin high and pilot jets, and secondly just for the ease of tuning. Those TM24's can be a pain to tune, sometimes!

A waxed-over chain... I've seen my share of "white" chains, too!

I have a load of Mikuni jets, but you're right, the TM24 can be a pain to tune with it's ultra sensitive float.

I was looking for a paddock stand like yours, but could find one narrow enough. What do you think about this one?

The stand in the link is really freaking sweet, dude! I like how it adjust for width... My stand is an old school Takegawa; I actually bought 3 of them at once and had my buddy ship them over in one big box!

You are making me want to look into getting a new stand! Haha!

...you had mentioned "having your new chain installed...".
-are you having it installed because you are getting a permanent link put in the chain as opposed to a "clip" master link?

You may want to wait and use the removable "clip" style master link, because once you start tuning and modifying, you will probably need to do do some sprocket changes to get where you need to be with top speed and torque.

Once you find the right sprocket-tooth combo, then add the permanent "rivit" link...

The chain has a master link, so it can be changed around a bit. Had it installed a couple of hours ago.

I love that stand you have. Webike had some Takegawa stands too. Want to sell yours?

Sure dude, I actually have another new Takegawa at my parents house... I'll go over to their house and take a pic for you- the Takegawa stand works really well for the NS swingarm...

Sounds good on the Webike order; I'll look around and see if there's anything I need... well, I NEED a lot of stuff, but can't afford most of it!! Haha! I've got a ton of stuff bookmarked like a XMas list!

It's a GCraft shifting shaft stabilizer; it makes the shift feeling much more rigid. I had these installed on all three of my Monkey bike builds, and it really really helps!
