gear box and engine oil

Heavier oil should slow them down. Keep in mind that the guys in HI are running at 75 - 90F most of the time. 90W in a Spree rearend would probably slow you way down in the near freezing temps elsewhere. They're also running for extended periods (a lot farther), I gotta believe that higher viscosity oil has a larger heat capacity (I'll check on that.)
Guys in the midwest have encountered, I'm sure, older manual transmissions that won't shift/budge until the motor warms the trans up enough to heat the oil. Happens below 10-20F.
GM manual transmissions (and probably others) use ATF fluid to run in. ATF is basically just 10W oil with antifoaming agents. It's done for improved fuel economy. The transmissions are designed for this oil; since Honda recommends 10-30W (thus the oil is 10W once heated,) it should work too. Jerry recommended only using 2-stroke oil in the crankcase; seems like the wrong stuff to use, but it's also 10W and he had a lot more exp. with Spree than most guys I've talked with.

my real world experience Is i have had a spree and an 87 that went over 50 and an 87 and a G-dasn that went over 65. I am underestimating cause lots of guys want proof but they no it's reasonable to say 65mph. All four mopeds with high performance parts had 90w gear oil.Kikwear wrote:So are timing gears and most everything else in a combustion motor. These things make, what 2-3hp? Seems like you'd be slowing it down. How's your real world experience?

waht ever you run ,just make sure it's synthetic!
I run gm 75 w gear oil, smells good like grapes-even say's it on the bottle
the upper hose is for venting ,the reason people run the nipple off the trans is as the oil heats up,iit expands so they lower the level by using the nipple and a tube- kinda like a radiator cap with out the pressure?

thers is no drain oil. You need to unscrew the 5 bolts holding the plate to the case and carefully pry the plate off as to not tear the gear case gasket.Clean out the case and reinstall the plate. Then refill oil throu the fill hole till the oil level gets to the fill hole.berreta22 wrote:All this babbling about what oil to use and where the fill plug is but where is the drain plug? Thats the question that has yet to be answered as it was asked in the earlier post.
