what did you do to split the case? i'm having a * of a time getting the variator side out? The alternator side of the case came off simple with my home made puller.

Very carefully! I actually used a method that you probably should not do. I clamped the cvt side to my work bench and tapped on the crank until it dropped out. Make sure you leave the nut on the threads to protect them and help prevent the shaft from warping. I also recommend a rubber hammer.

Greetings:
I agree and add that this is one time where there is little/no risk of damaging the crank. All the forces remain within the left crankshaft end, from the nut/threads to the bearing. Tapping a light press fit shouldn't damage the bearing, but if it does they're relatively cheap to replace.

Its a must anytime the case is split to replace the bearings and seals. It's cheap insurance IMO.

From the opposite side of the case beat them out with a large socket and extension. I actually had one bearing remain on the shaft when I took mine out. I used a dremel tool to cut it off.

Hmmm not afraid to damage the inner bearing race, where it sits into the case? i was thinking of building another tool to press it out. i'd hate to destroy my only case.
my idea was to do the socket idea and use a huge c-clamp to force it out, and on the opposite side have a peace of 1/2 flat steel on the case. i think that should work.
but if your way works why the * not. nothing like hitting something with a hammer.

Your method defiantly sounds safer. And if I had had a big enough C-clamp I would have done the same thing. But, if you crank was moving freely before the bearings should be seated at a 90 degree to the race. So, I don't think there is a too big of a risk to wacking them out of there because the race is keeping the bearing straight as it is coming out. Just make sure the socket is firmly planted on the bearing.

Thanks for bringing that up Chris... Well, I have learned a valuable lesson: over powered elite + loose gravel on the road + trying to be a bad * = epic fail. Luckily the elite is still in the build up phase so the only body panel on it was the headlight cowling. Not much damage to the scoot. Only a broken blinker case and some scratching on the cowling. I think some bondo and some sanding will get rid of the bulk of the scratches.
The scoot took the brunt of the fall followed closely by my left hand. Thankfully this was the only part of my body exposed. There very easily could have been damage to my legs and arms but they were covered. Always remember to wear heavy jeans and long sleeves!
In other news I got my brothers spree working. It starts and runs like a champ now. Oh and Chris, since you brought up this little mishap to the forum my labor rate has gone from $0.00/hour to $75/hour. Bill is in the mail.
