They lock in place and will allow you to re-thread to the original size, if there's enough meat around the original thread (don't have carb in front of me to check though).

try what wheelman said about the brass tube to the left of the main jet in your carb. your symptoms are identical to what mine where... it would idle then when i try to give it any throttle it boggs. soak or carb clean it and use compressed air on it and you should be up and running again.
