Seems like if someone would just come up with an easy to install cvt upgrade for the spree, most of our concerns would be solved. Beter low end acceleration and better top end with one upgrade.
It isn't that ease. The Spree has a small crankshaft end. Too small to work with any existing variator. It takes engineering and then money to make a prototype, test it and them make changes then more money to have then produced.

I'd sure like to learn more about the 87 spree that does 42mph in your sig :smile:

I have my 2.8" tall tires on order but don't think that will get me where I'd eventually like to be with my spree. How did you get 42mph on yours? I have air grinders and a flex shaft dremel so might break down and start doing some port and polish on mine if I have to. A drop in CVT would be nice but if that is not in the cards with the spree, I guess it is time to start thinking about how to improve flow on the engine.

i can support this. when i got my spree it didnt run at all. the first thing i did was add a silver surfer sticker to the front, now it goes 33-35mph
(i also cleaned the carb and bought a new spark plug)
so if you do the math
stock=0mph
sticker=33mph
thats a 300% increase in speed

its the stickers I've been missing... dang why didn't I think of that earlier :wink:

If I throw some of my left over hotrod stickers like holley, edelbrock, accel, etc... maybe I can do 40 with my stock spree :coolcruise:

Took the words right out of my mouth.
Yes yes yes it is al about flow.
Spreetard's spree has a stock 41mm piston with over 8888 miles on it :surprise:
but his jug, intake,case, and exhaust have all been ported to increase flow.
His top speed of 42mph came with the sacrafice of intial take off.
with the 42mph set up, you need to push with your feet a litte bit to even get going.
It is easy to change the pulley back, and gain some low end back.
His pully mod is shimmed in with thin washers, so all you have to do is move a washer or to.
Search ancient chinnese secrect on this frourm too see how we got it to take off fast AND have 40 mph top speed.

i wouldn't call it "fast", and there is no case porting yet. other than that, what he said :mrgreen:
i'm betting i can squeeze out a few more mph yet...
some rainy day i'll tear it down and take pictures, wait till you see how big my intake is...

I'm not close to 40mph with my 85 spree yet but I did go from 28mph to 33mph by swapping out the tires for some IRC ones that are a little under 3" tall instead of the stock 2.5" ones. The cool thing is because the new tires have a tread pattern that has alot less rolling resistance, I can't really notice much difference in the bottom end. Maybe takes a second more to get up to 10mph but then revs right on up. I weigh 192lb and it pushes me 33mph on level ground. My son weighs 165 and he can do 34-35mph on level ground. I will be looking into some flow improvements soon but right now I am just enjoying riding it with the better top speed. At 33mph I can drive along with the flow of traffic on your typical 35mph streets. Only time I feel a little uneasy is on 45mph streets where cars still fly by. I am thinking I should be able to get it up to 35mph with a few small tweaks to flow on the intake and exhaust side. Just need to learn a bit more about them before I break out the grinders.
