Mike must be looking at the international chart. All USA '85-87 Aero 50 scoots came factory with the variated af05. '87 being the pinnacle IMO.

We seem to have conflicting "official" information here.
Perhaps the AF09E engine was a mid-year production change?
Perhaps I have a limited edition NB50 with a leftover 86 engine?
Perhaps it is not even the original engine?

Now I am getting a bit confused about exactly what engine I have.
The case is stamped AF05E and yet it has a kick starter.
Also the stator wiring goes through the case not like what the 85-87 Aero service manual shows but like what the 84-87 Spree manual shows.
It also has a 2 bolt intake manifold if that means anything.
Hmmm...
I guess tomorrow I will remove the left side cover and see if it has a variator or is a single speed.
That should be the best way to figure it out?

Well now, it seems that I have a single speed AF05E engine, no variator.
Did Honda even make such a thing?
Is it a Spree engine, or a mutt engine made from junkyard parts, or did the original Aero engine get swapped into a Spree and the Spree engine into this Aero?
Anyways, I have a single speed Aero, which from what I have read, is not desirable what so ever. The variator in the Aero, with it's quicker acceleration, was the desirable feature about the Aero vs the Spree.
I am not so sure that I even want to go any further with this bike. I have a feeling that it will be sluggish and the Spree transmission will be overloaded from the extra weight of the Aero platform and rider and fail prematurely.
Apparently the Spree transmission has smaller bearings and shafts designed to take a lighter load.

Sounds like a spree engine too me. I would not worry about overloading the engine but the performance will not be near what the aero had. You could swap a proper aero engine back in.

Could anyone here give me some clues as to what to look for to determine exactly what year this Spree engine is?
I can post photos if it will help.
Does it really matter? Are all the parts interchangeable to a reasonable degree?
I am going to read from Wikispreedia now, perhaps it can shed some light on this for me.

For parts, '84-85 and '86-87 are the basic breakouts. Several parts interchange for all years. Kickstart was 86-87.
