As long as a couple people who know something about maintenance would be coming along, I'd be interested in it as an event. It'd be pretty freaking sweet to do. The main question would be one of what would happen at night, whether motels/hotels would be used or whether people would camp.

It being a summer event doesn't automatically imply one or the other. I know people who've motorcycled across the US and camped and people who've done it and stayed at hotels. Both during the summer.

i think it would be awesome to camp the whole way out, staying on BLM and national forest for free. the trip could thus be touted as "across america for less than $100"

At this point in time, I'd say that we ought to decide if we're all really serious about doing this. Because it will take a lot of time in terms of planning routes, where we're stopping, who's carrying what and when we're doing it. I'm planning on moving next summer anyway, so my schedule's flexible in terms of when I can take a leave of absence from work. If anyone else is really serious about doing this, drop me a line and I'd say it would be worth it's own topic section in the index so we can subdivide into more specific lines of discussion.
