Re: Oil - no start
Starter is toast, also could not get it to fire using a drill on the drive face. Not sure whats going on, has spark and compression and used starter fluid so expected it to at least want to try. Stripped the screw on the starter as well so will have to get that off somehow. Without a starter and no kickstarter these early ones don’t do much
Re: Oil - no start
Id start back at square one.
Clean carb
Test for air leaks, entire motor…even both crank seals, ive had the stator side seal pop out before. Use a flywheel puller for access.
Make sure fuel delivery system is operating
Make sure spark is present
Make sure no restrictions in airflow…airbox, exhaust, etc
Check compression
Etc, etc…

I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

Yeah I’ll check that stuff when I find more time. The starter though thats kinda a dealbreaker unless I can rebuild it.
Re: Oil - no start
I would look for a kick start cover from a '85-'86 You can deal with that starter later. It will just happen again if you run the starter for more than 7-10 seconds without letting it cool off in between, and be sure you have a completely charged battery when you do find or fix the starter. Turning it over too slowly WILL burn it up. And if you saw smoke, then that's what happened. It's toast. Buy a new or good used one.

Re: Oil - no start
Took the starter apart and it looks ok, cleaned everything really well with electronics cleaner and lots of grime came off. Put it all back together and it turned for a split second with 12v then nothing. Did this with it off the bike. I’m going to drop the inner shaft into the ultrasonic cleaner for a while and see if that helps any. Otherwise nothing looks broken in there just still maybe some dirt or oil possibly inside those wires. The two little blocks that contact against the shaft do have some wear but still make good contact with it.

Ok so the starter wiring broke right after it loops around one of the hooks. I was able to solder a new wire connector to connect the wires and the starter now works.
That said, when I try and jump it the starter engages without pulling the brake lever or pushing the start button. Any idea what that is from? Faulty starter relay maybe?
