Ill pull the plug and get a photo of that too.
I dont have any tubes whatsoever coming off the airbox lid. Maybe this is the problem.
I may have mentioned this before. but the Prior owner had clipped the yellow wire on the bystarter and taped it off. The bystarter was no good.
When I got this, I plugged the bystarter (bad one) back in . un taped and reconnected the bystarter not knowing it was bad. The engine would not start at all like this. I then unhooked the yellow wire again. and the engine ran pretty good, it would also start.
Now that being said. What could have been adjusted out of whack to alow the "proper" running of the engine with a bad bystarter? Since I have replaced the bystarter with a good one I am wondering if I need to adjust something back down to spec in order for the engine to start and run with a properly functioning bystarter.
Let me go get some photos now and post them up.

Photos of the airbox and filter. No holes except for one large one going to the carb so that is the only one I plugged.

What the carb looks like and position of the bystarter, fully seated.

Where the float is with the main jet sitting level. Does this look okay, New float with a few miles on it.

Nother of the float position.

Now the interesting part, On a tip from UPSmale and others I checked the small brass tube where the bystarter sits on The jet is clean all 4 holes. But the small brass tube in the bottom of the carb pan was kind of blocked, I pushed a small sewing needle in there. The photo is of the wire in the upper right hand side, the wire was not strong enough to get through. but took the photo. I was able to move some air through this small hole, but not too much, there might still be some blockage.

after cleaning this hole out I put everything back together. It almost started, it wanted to go but would not catch and run. Could this be the problem. I can clean it out better tomorrow.

Also what├óÔé¼Ôäós all the s**t inside the air box. Take it off and clean the crap out of it. I can also see dirt and tarnish all over that carb. Power wash the whole bike and then clean the carb. Just putting the thing back together when the rest of the scoot is all dirty; crap can fall into the carb and screw things up again. You almost have to be surgical clean with these old 2 strokes.
What dip are you using? The Murray├óÔé¼Ôäós stuff is crap, get the good stuff at your local independent auto parts store.

Slap me around and call me Susan.
I will take it apart this weekend and let it sit over night in the carb dip.
I got it at Napa.
as far as the power wash I was a bit leary about blasting that stuff and getting water where it shouldnt be.
I will spray it down as well once everthing is buttoned up.
Back to Kenny McCormick, I dont see any other holes inthe airbox? are there supposed to be some extra ones somewhere, I have heard not to put any more in there.

The two SQUARES yes I see them.
When someone referenced the lid having holes I took it literally looking for round holes. Also read posts about folks drilling extra holes in the airbox. So thats what I was looking for. When they were then described as rectangles I looked for rectangles. When you look at the entire lid there ARE two rectangles. One holds the air cleaner element, and the other rectangle holds the ignition coil. I know I am a newbie here. I guess thats why I am taking advise very literally.
Not trying to be an A hole about geometry and basic shapes here but I was literally taking folks at their word..
When someone gives you directions and says take the first left, that means take the first left. Not the first left at the stop sign, or light or gas station but the first available chance you have to make a left.
Again not trying to be an *. I do appreciate all the help. The carb is apart and soaking in carb dip. Berrymans Chem dip to be exact.
A donut without a hole is not a donut. Its a danish.

Sorry, I do the same thing sometimes, you wouldn't believe how long it took me to figure out how to start the d*** thing after i replaced the starter switch(brake lever has to be down). Anyhow i think this is a dirty carb issue not a rich/lean issue judging by the plug.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.
No problem. The female unit is all over me to get it running so she can take it to work. (work is .5 miles away and she drives our civic there) so there will be probably a quart of gas savings every week.......
I bought it for her last October, and promptly like any good husband or man for that matter rode it two miles and took it all apart:) Now that the weather is getting nice it has hit the highest executive order in the house.

Okay Progress!!! I let the carb soak well, Cleaned everything again. Pumped up my compressor to 150PSI which is the max and ran the blow gun through a needle for filling basketballs. blew everything out.
Put it all back together and partial success. I got the spree to start and run, but I needed to help it some by plugging the two square holes on the airbox. The bystarter was in seated and bolted down. So thats progress.
What does that mean that the ped started better with the airbox plugged. Obviously it was drawing less air. but by me plugging the holes it almost fired instantly.. Once it was warmed up I tried to adjust the idle but it is very erratic. I would get it set, ride it down the block, come back and it was way high or so low it would die. I have the springs in the adjuster screws. but I mean it was sitting on the stand running. idle was set, back wheel not moving. Then 3 seconds later it would wind up on its own. I would hit the back brake and it would return to idle fine, then do the same thing.??
Also have a very questionable throttle response. I checked and the throttle cable is not binding anywhere.
The engine will bog down on full throttle some times and will go great other times. Probably means I need to clean the carb again right.

I├óÔé¼Ôäóm having the exact same problem with my buddies Spree. He has two 86 Sprees and one runs perfect and the other has the same problem as you. We swapped the carbs and the problem moved to the other Spree and the one with the problem runs great, so it is defiantly in the carb. After another good cleaning if it still does it I├óÔé¼Ôäóm going to dip the carb in florescent dye and check for a crack in the body. We are also getting new O rings for the heat insulator and the back of the carb. I├óÔé¼Ôäóll keep you posted.
