What is in the mufflers? and what would happen if i removed the insides?

baffles. if u removed them it would have more power but would be a lot louder.

Since this wont be on the road do you think i should try removing them? Would it messup the back presure? Do you know any one who has done this?

I have tried this. I need to rejet and retry. I bumped the main up to a #68. The result was a louder scooter with better midrange and lower top speed. I'm going to rejet to the stock #65.

You can defeat the baffles two ways. One way is to drill 4 - 1/4" holes around the out pipe, about 6" into the pipe. Or you can cut the back 4" or so off with a hacksaw. I need to post the pics of this sometime. Drilling the holes is definately easier.

Most of the noise reduction is in the center section, which has absorber material (fibreglass) captured under perf steel. At any rate, the restriction that you're dealing with is carbon, which has to be burned out, and which is mostly in the pipe to the muffler, not in the muffler itself. If you get the entire thing red-hot the carbon will burn itself to a powder. Compressed air won't remove carbon buildup.

ok thanks. I think i will cut it open this weekend and remove build up and if you think it will make a difference i will remove 4 inches and weld the back back on.

It sounds cooler. It has better midrange; I just need to work on top speed through jetting.

If you saw it lengthwise you'll see where to cut it. There are 3 baffle chambers, besides the main one which has the absorbtive material. Just cut the last 2 chambers off, leaving the 1/2" outpipe sticking out an inch or so from the main chamber.

This was on the newer 86/87 squarish looking muffler. The '84 ('85?) has a more cigar shaped muffler; I've never sectioned one of these.
