Heli-Coils
Greetings:
Agreed that Heli-Coils are strong and reliable. However I've found that in applications where frequent disassembly/assembly is required, they sometimes loosen and spin out of their threads. I used them a lot in composite windsurfing fins, which get changed out almost every session. I often had to replace them. This is what happened on my carb, too.
I would add that bonding them in with JB Quik or JB Weld would help them last indefinitely. Just don't get any wet stuff on the bolt threads...

Most of my money is spent on scooterparts. The rest is just wasted.

I agree that they can come loose - especially in soft aluminum. I just tried some fatter self-tapping insets from a guy on eBay - he has 5mm and 6mm. They work great. Apparently they are made in Germany and the eBay guy is in Isreal! What a connected world we are.

Well the scooter is fixed for now. I ordered a new by-starter and received it yesterday. Pluged it in this morning and she fired right up and idled smoothly.
Thanks for all your input.
As for freze plugs: I've got two held in with blotcks and bolts. I think in the next rebuild I will drill and tap on either side of the two not otherwise secure.
