Carb dissolution is probably just an urban myth.
This was the most gummed-up carb I've personally seen. Dying on WOT and part throttle, I thought "gee, it's acting just like the main jet is plugged." And of course, the main jet was clogged shut (a personal first) and needed to be cleaned out; I could see light through the varnish and had thought it was open the first time. Bike runs great now.

My sister got a Yamaha PW50 that had clearly never had the bowl drained of water(bottom of bowl crusty), when I pulled the emulsion tube out I couldn't believe it ran, packed with carb bowl corrosion.

...and a 3rd carb cleaning. Bike wouldn't hold top speed; topping out at 25 MPH but need to be coaxed there, never a good sign, bogging at WOT. Obviously getting hot and running lean.
Pulled carb 3rd time, vowing to switch with known good if I couldn't fix it. Removed main jet and *carefully* scraped it out with a guitar string. I was still scraping out bits of varnish from the sides. Once I got it all out, reassembled. Bike runs great now, holds WOT, solid accelleration, top speed now 30 MPH. Wheelman can now chime in about doing it right the first time with a carb bath.
I want to thank all you guys that stop in on the board and contribute; I've learned much more about 2-strokes from this board than from any manual I've picked up.

Huh - guitar string! Don't know much about the size and material in jet sizes. Was that a wound metal string? Those smooth bumps could be a good cleaner.
