PLEASE HELP! Resurrecting 1987 SE50P Elite and derestriction

Every time I try to align the top tooth up, It begins to engage the spring. Then it just moves back to the original position. I dont understand how that can be.

Ok, so I positioned the 1/2 moon gear successfully reinstalled it 3 different times and it give a 1/2 crank then binds!!! CLIFF TIME

i may have over looked it and maybe it was asked, but is your gasket in place? if you still cant get it. hit up bradthree and see if he has one that will work.

This thing even binds when you have the cover off and try the electric start!

just going over things, sorry if you have checked them. on the outside of the cover, so where the kickstart attatches to the cover, there is a c clip on the shaft that keeps the kickstart shaft from moving into the cover further. make sure that is there. i didnt seat mine properly one time and the same symptoms happened. good luck

This clip is present but, If I push on the spindle where the kicker attaches it will move in about 1/16th and you can push it back in from the inside. I have the cover off now and I am recharging my battery. the starter will turn it over if I help turning by hand. With the cover off.

hmm. if your battery is good then maybe your starter is weak for some reason. maybe before you owned it they only used e start and its really weak. last resort you might need a new starter. the brushes in your starter might be super worn down and that would affect the torque the starter can put out. but i am more worried about how you cant get the kickstart to move freeley. try using a couple washers on the cover bolts to space it out a tad. dont use electric start with it spaced out extra though, just see if that makes the kicker work better.

didnt you say martynkim that it bound up even with the electric start? odd question but does the engine move freely? can you spin the motor by hand with the spark plug removed? or have you figured out that the kick start is your problem? does that kick start bind in the cover without it attached to the motor? just random questions? tring to help figure this out.

put a 17mm socket on the drive pulley with the cover off of course. with a socket and wrench you should be able to turn the engine over pretty easily. definately one handed easily.

That is normal. I cannot electric start mine with the cover off. The cover lines up the starter with the bendix.

Check the Ground connection by the starter. It should be attached to one of the bolts that hold the starter on.

Try spacing cover like aerorob said since starter bendix is held in place like Trafficjamz said. Bendix will bind if cover is off. Try e-start and kicker with spaced cover on.

Disassembled entire kick assembly found worn (BAD) sleeve where shaft turns. grinding against the cover. seems I need that cover after all evilone. If you are willing still? Reassembled installed. Same problem. Removed spark plug began to operate starter and starter turns motor over OIL EVERYWHERE!!! no spark from plug replaced with new plug NOW SPARK! battery just died. charging now I think Im gonna hear it run soon!

I tried to shim with 1/16 washers it did not help I put some fresh gas in (gas is a year old)and charging the battery now. how long should I charge? (DEAD)
