Steering wheel puller with the correct sized "long" bolts from the hardware store. Otherwise you can get a special "14 pc. gear puller set" from Harbor Frieght if you want to spend the $. It cost me $35 plus shipping and I had to wait a week to get the tool on the east coast. Not that I have an 80, but I needed/wanted it after the Aero 50 crank wouldn't give up the bearing without some force.

Try your local Autozone loaner program. Pay a refundable deposit for the tool - get it all back when tool returned.

I think the harmonic balancer puller will do it. They don't specify the max bolt spacing, so you'll just need to double check that.

Can't remember if you are in Spokane or Yakima, but there's at least 3 stores in each.

im in yakima, we have 2 autozones. i'll ask them about it.

no threads on drive gear.

Put a washer on the end of the bolt just small enough to fit through the holes, and a nut to hold it on, slide it into the holes, rotate the washers behind the pully as much as possible and give it a go. Just my 0.02, but it might work.

Then what are the bolts on Honda's puller supposed to go into?

There should be slots in the oval holes at the back of the gear that nuts and washers on the pair of long bolts will slip into.

right, but it doesnt look like there are nuts and washers on that puller. it looks like its intended to thread into the bit itself.
i found a tusk crackcase splitter but its $45.

was thinking about going back to the 80's roots that these bikes come out of...so. i present you with option 2.

so i started taking apart the 2nd bike(the one for the rebuild, not the swap) and found something i've not come across...
bright green oil.
i was wondering if maybe the previous owner mixed anti-freeze w/ the oil...and if so, why? would this help to keep it cool? or do they just make bright green oil?

Here's what you get in the set:


The threads are just standard size so you can buy any nuts/washers to go on the ends or even buy your own long bolts to use in the yolk.

Its free anyway, so if you can't get it to work you'll only be out the time required to try it.

ah, i see, i thought you just got what was in the picture in the first link... which looks like threaded bolts, and the yolk.

update:
i've decided that since my spree is my only mode of transportation at the moment, i would hold off on the swap.
once i have the 2nd aero running i will swap engines on the spree.
so, this thread is being renamed "Tin worm: the '83 aero rebuild"
