See what happenens.

Won't run when warm

Post by ramrace1 »

Ok bought a bystarter from someone on this forum, installed it but the same problem still remains. Problem is when cold it runs fine. As it starts warming up it runs worse, to the point it won't run.
Connected the origingal bystarter to 12V battery and see no movement in the needle.
Any suggestions?

The by-starter should move outward after a minute or two on 12 volts.
If not, it's defective, and engine will run rich.

Check that you are getting 12 volts at the bystarter hookup when the engine is running.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Lol.. why do you guys keep saying its bystarter. That would not have an effect on the engine running once its warmed up. bystarter is for start to idle operation only.

My vote goes for intake problem or carb readjustment.

And I can check that out for you, I think you emailed me.
projects galore :nerd:

Yep, if by-starter wont open it's running rich when warm, like his plug chop is showing.
My money is on the by-starter!

Won't run when warm

Ok. Pulled the bystarter when engine was cold to check location of the needle. Started the engine, ran it until warm, pulled the bystarter and the needle had moved outward about 1/8 of an inch. So I assume the bystarter is working correctly. Engine still wants to die when warm and under full throttle. Suggestions?

Gotta check for vacuum leaks now.
With engine running, spray WD-40 around intake areas, such as top where carb mounts to fiber insulator and where intake bolts to reeds.
If there is a leak, the WD-40 will cause an increase in speed.
Propane or starting fluid works as well.

Ok, started the engine, brought it up to running temperature. Used starting fluid and sprayed carb and other lines/tubes. Made no difference in how the engine ran. Just to clarify, the engine runs fine on startup and has adequate power until it gets to running temperature. Then, under acceleration, the engine loses power and and will die when riding the scooter. If sitting up on the kick stand it accelerates fine warm or cold, and does not lose any power. Only loses power when warm and riding the scooter.

If there are no vacuum leaks, I suspect low compression.
Check this and let me know how
many lbs. it has.
