HEY guys, took her for a ride tonight! YAHOO.... She rides really smooth!!!
LOTS of smoke, but she ran good. Went up and down the block a few times trying to clear her out a bit. When I got home she was idling well, maybe a bit too strong, so I will have to back down on idle screw a bit. I think all she really needed was some love! LOL Seriously, I think after blowing her out a bit on the ride she is gonna run fine, time will tell....
I wanted to once again say thank you to all the folks that helped me out with this little scoot...

This may become an issue, cause the ride is really smooth and fun! I am surprised how nice it is, I had ridden some scooters in the past on vacation but never a Honda...
Couple things I need to look into now after a few miles of riding...
The spedometer isnt working. Not sure if the previous owner might have disconnected it to stop counting miles...
The turn signals dont work, though I have no battery right now, I expected them to work when the bike was running. They did work when I had it jumped over to a good car battery... Hope this doesnt mean the alternater is bad?
The bike smokes like *! Not a pleasant smelling smoke either. I had hoped to burn it out and it would go away but I rode about 10 miles and it's still smokin... I guess I need to do some adjusting to the oil pump or something. I'm glad to have the too much oil problem rather than too little....
I probably should put some sort of engine conditioner in there after not being started for over 10 years I would think, is there anything you guys would recomend I use?

Usually the idle has to be up for turn signals to work without a good battery, if you are coming to a stop they should stop working without a good battery.

Spedometer not working.....

Post by nightcruiser »

Now that I am riding the scooter I noticed the spedometer is not working. I disconnected and inspected the wheel end of the cable, everything seemed to be in order on both sides to my eyes. I am pretty sure this spedometer is purely mechanical right? It doesn't need DC power to function? (Cause I am running without a battery right now)
Any tips on the spedo would be appreciated... thanks...

if the gear on the wheel is fine and the end looks good on the speedo, then pull the cable to make sure it is one piece. or reconnect it to the wheel side, then spin the wheel and make sure that the cable spins on the speedo side.

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=20463&hilit=speedometer mousewheels explains the speedo on this page.

Pulled the spedo cable again today, turned the cable with a small screwdriver and I could see the needle moving a bit, so that all seems to be in order. I then turned the tab inside the hub with needle nose pliers and it spun freely, so it looks like the spedo problem is in the hub. I guess I will have to pull the front wheel off and rip the hub apart and see what is going on inside there....
Of coarse, advise is always appreciated....

Yikes - I don't drive the speedo drive unless the hub is taken apart. Although, if it spun and the front wheel did not turn, its probably already got a stripped nylon gear off the hub (see pic)

There is a worm gear off the hub driving that tab for the speedometer cable input. It's kinder to the gear train to spin the front wheel, and watch that tab move.

It was loose as a goose when I grabbed it, if it had offered any resistance whatsoever I wouldn't have turned it. It was immediately apparent that it was not engaged to anything. I have to assume be plastic gear in mine is toast after looking at your photos... thank.

Yeah, I think most all are careful and put care into testing which does not always get posted. That's the probable failure. Easy fix, not much $$. I just was pointing out there could be an issue with such a test for others.

Can anyone help me find the part number and the proper name for this plastic spedometr gear for my 1987 Elite 50? I scrolled through the manual, there are no part numbers on the diagram of the front hub, and most the explanation talks about the brake...
