So I got a 1986 Spree for $50. I've pulled everything off the bike, cleaned it, replaced a bunch, and put it back together. I'm still waiting for the gas tank to come in, original is rusted inside, so I hooked up my lawnmowers tank for initial start. I premixed so I could prime the oil pump on the first start. The battery is dead so I was forced to go with the kick start. I kicked for 10-15 minutes with no avail. Took the plug out and connected it to the coil outside the cylinder. When I kicked it outside there was no spark!!! I will admit that this is not something I expected. I never pulled the altenator out.

Where should I start troubleshooting??

First, you may have a faulty or fould spark plug.

A simple thing you may have overlooked would be the connections to the back of the ignition coil. Make sure those are securely connected.

Its easy to check and see if the stator is working properly. You do not have to pull the parts from the bike. Get your trusty multimeter out and get to your wire harness located on the left side(if sitting on seat) by the floorboard. Pull ou the white and yellow wires.

White and engine ground should read 0.2-0.9 ohms.

Yellow and engine ground should read 0.1-0.8 ohms.

If all of that is good then the culprit may be your CDI.

Other options would be a faulty ignition switch or high tension wire

Its a good idea to download a Spree manual for free here on this site.
