I have an 85 that is in decent condition. We charged up a new battery, replaced the gas and it turned over just fine with the exception of the gas spraying out of the carb.
My son and I quickly cleaned the carb and now it doesn't leak but it also doesn't run. If we let it sit for a minute or two then it will start for 4-5 seconds before it dies. Try again too soon and nothing happens. I pulled the fuel line from the intake of the carb and cranked it. It pulled fuel fine this way. If anything it seemed like an awful lot of fuel was coming down the pipe. When it does start there is a ton of smoke.
I was just given this bike and I'm sure it sat in a barn/storage area for the past 10+ years. It only has 400 miles on it but needs so TLC.
Any ideas what to look at next?
clean carb. fuel flows. won't stay running.

reclean the carb with compressed air. chech to make sure the main jet is a #65. if starting for the 1st time you can always expect these problems and a lot of smoke.
