difference between SB50P and SB50

Post by eliteguy50 »

Can you tell me the difference between the SB50P and the SB50?
from what I can tell:the SB50P is the restricted model (Iowa model) that will go 30mph, the SB50 is the regular model that will do 35mph. But what are the actual restrictions? is it RPM? is it driveline ratios?...
Thanks

SB50 is an Elite E, no variator, slow, a slightly better Spree.
SA50P is an Elite 1994+ has a coveted DIO style motor, tons of mods.
My SB50 takes my 250lb * @ 32, my SA50P once I derestricted does @ 37.

Oh, I just reread. There's an SB50P?

yes, that is good, I have a sb50p and I had a friend's kid ride it. Even at 67 pounds, he only reached 30mph :x
I don't know if they were ported different or if the sb50 just has a higher rpm range or what because there is no washer in my exhaust pipe (sb50p).

I have the sb50p and it will go 35 mph, mine goes about 31, only because I bought a rear rim & tire off eBay and the guy never said if the rim was true and straight, anyways I installed it and now it wobbles a little bit, therefore it only does 31 mph max. I have another rim that is true and straight that im going to put on when I get a flat or something with the one I have on there now.

hope that helps, good luck. 8)

The service manual shows a difference in the cylinder

Compression Ratio
SB50 6.8:1
SB50P 7.0:1 - probably higher because of port timing

Exhaust timing
Open - SB50 77 BBDC, SB50P 74 BBDC
Close - SB50 77 ABDC, SB50P 74 ABDC

Scavenge timing
Open - SB50 60 BBDC, SB50P 57 BBDC
Close - SB50 60 ABDC, SB50P 57 ABDC

Carb Tag
SB50 PA34C, SB50P PA34B, Don't know why. A minor diff is Idle mixture setting 1 7/8 for SB50, 1 3/4 turns for SB50P. Main jet is the same size (68) Jet needle setting same - 2nd notch

Transmission gears/belt reduction
SB50/SB50P share the same reduction and belt ratio. , 6.385:1 reduction gears (13T/83T), 1.8:1 belt ratio.
Note: The 13/83 Gears are the 'fast' ones. Early Sprees (84/85 and the slow 86/87's) got 12/83T. All Sprees and SB50's share the 1.8:1 belt ratio.

Muffler
Parts fiche shows the mufflers have different part numbers. Previous owner already modified your pipe? Head pipe dia? Internal construction? Room for some research...

Will put this into tabular form, add the Sprees and submit as a tech doc.

Sorry to bear for resurfacing this topic but I just want to bump this to ask a question regarding the shocks.

Aside from the power compartments, are the shocks the same?

The spree wiki said that the elite shock would work for the spree but didn't specify and I found an sb50p shock.
I would like to buy it if the sb50p and the sb50 have the same shock.

Thank you and sorry again to bear if he see this.

Yes. The Elite E shocks are all the same. It will work on the Spree but the spree shock will not work on the Elite E.
