Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

I have a 1985 nq50 50cc spree. I purchased it as is, and rode around on it for about 50 miles. The previous owner didnt fill the transmission casing with gear oil, so after running extremely dry, the back wheel seized. I took off the shell,the pully casing and the muffler. I then filled the transmission casing with wd-40, and now it seems to rotate ok. But, when I finally try to crank it to start, the motor only turns one time and does nothing else. I tried recharging the battery thinking that was the problem, but its fully charged. The clutch is operated by holding down the rear brake, so I dont know if that also has anythiung to do with it. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

are you running premix or the oil injection setup ? did you also check to see if the starter is stuck

The clutch is not operated by any hand levers, it is automatic and works off of engine RPM. All pulling the brake lever does is allow the starter to be cranked.

Can you rotate the rear wheel by hand? FYI, WD-40 is not gear lube and is not heavy enough for the properly lubrication of the gears and bearings/bushings.

How often should you change the gear oil? every 100, 250, 500 miles? I know it only hold 3-4 ounces? just wondering.

Spree service manual does not list a mileage interval. They say replace every 2 years. I'd guess many have missed the 2 yrs interval...

i dont think most people have ever checked the oil in there since its a two stroke they must assume that all they do is add the two stroke oil

I change the gear oil every year. It only takes a few minutes and is just part of my routine maintenance. Get yourself one of those small squirt type oil cans. It makes the job a piece of cake to do.

You would be surprised at how many cars and trucks are running down the highway that have never had the rearend serviced. Scooters are so easy to service, annual is not unreasonable at all.

Now on the subject of squirt cans. Where do you find one? They are not as easy to find as they once were. I pick them up at estate auctions when I find them.

I got two at Harbor Freight last year. I paid less than $2 at the sidewalk sale.

Yep, that's what I want, except don't need the flex tip. Shipping too much for internet sale. I watch for next time truck comes to town.

The closest Harbor Freight is about 40 miles from my house. But when in town, I tend to make an effort to drop by if I "might" need something.
