Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

Hey all

Just wanted to drop a line and introduce myself. I was really never into the scooter thing much but since the gas prices are going crazy it might be a better choice at the moment.

Now here's the sad story on my scooter. It's a 84 Spree and it's been sitting in my backyard for 15 years! And no it does not run sadly. Once I cleaned off all of the plants and weeds the grew around and inside it, I noticed the bystarter is completely gone (most likey because of me) and the body panels are not in so good shape. The starter was seized but I was able to break it free after removing it and cleaning it up. Engine still turns by hand, drive belt is broken. Carb is in decent shape and there was not much dirt inside it. Ignition system still works. Just for the fun of it a got a new battery oil and gas and tried to crank it.... it ran for about 5 secs and that was it.


Not too sure what I need to get this thing working but I'd appreciate any advise. I understand the bystarter is like a choke and it needs this?

I know it probably is not worth to fix but I'm up for a challenge and I think it would make a good documentary on what not to do for storing a scooter for a long time....

I hope to have some pics uploaded soon of the "project in progress" and lots more to come in the restoration!

Well, if you got it to run at all it's a good start!

Clean out the fuel and oil tanks and fill with fresh stuff, clean the rust out of the gas tank if rusty and run an inline filter. Get a replacement bystarter, it'll lean out without that. Clean the carb, it's probably dirty as well. Check the aircleaner, it may have rotted (you don't want that stuff in the engine.) Replace the belt and you're set.

You will probably have some electrical problems if you live in a damp climate. You can deal with those as they come up.

Might want to check the tires too. After 15 years outside they're probably rotted.

Thanks for the insight noiseguy. Your definately right that it needs new tires and air cleaner. This weekend i will start cleaning one part at a time and inspect the hoses and wires. Do you know where I could find a new bystarter online? Not to mention a lot of cosmetic parts.

thanks guys for the pointers and resources. I have not done much besides moved it into the garage at the moment. I will have the first pics up by this weekend.... it's not pretty so don't give me too much crap for now
