Getting legal in Illinois (title & tax & transfer fees)
Today I spent an hour at the Illinois DMV getting my scooter legal.
With a title and bill of sale you:
stand in line
fill out 2 forms
stand in the wrong line
pay $25 tax
go back to wrong line
smile at the lady behind the counter who is obviously leaning forward to give you a better view after paying her an offhand compliment
go to another line
pay $104 for title and plates
go home
Odds are more line time and fees will be associated if you don't have the title & bill of sale.
I went to Elston, I usually trek out to Niles, but I read online that Niles can't do title transfer.
Just an FYI.
Will post back insurance fees etc, once I get that done.

What kind of scoot? If its a moped and its $104 then that sucks!Eft37 wrote:Today I spent an hour at the Illinois DMV getting my scooter legal.

Greetings:
You didn't happen to snap a cellphone pic of the counter lady leaning forward, did you?
Glad you're all nice and legal. I am too, almost. I "transferred" Flash I's inspection sticker to serve a few months on F3. Don't tell nobody...

Re: Getting legal in Washington (title & tax & transfer fees)
I did the same yesterday, except in Washington. Here, we "get" to pay sales tax on used vehicles (don't get me started!). I swapped my Kayak for my Elite 50S, so no actual money changed hands. However the PO had just got the bike - in trade for some handyman work - and the PO's PO wrote in $200 as the sale price, so that's what I had to pay tax on.
$75 and change, including agency fee's, a years tabs and title transfer. I was pleasantly surprised.

Same here in Iowa except there is no spot asking for the sale price on the title so you walk into the county courthouse (Iowa's law) and just tell them the price you 'paid'frogpirate wrote:I did the same yesterday, except in Washington. hey eft37, we're practically neighbors..(from northbrook).
I just recently got a spree...
haven't gotten it registered yet, but can't you get it done at the currency exchange?..i wonder how much faster (if at all) it is..
good to know another scooter owner is close by!

@tealhatchie57-
I could've done Currency Exchange, but figured if I needed any 'fast-talking' I could fare better at the DMV, they seem less strict, also saved @$20 in fees by going DMV direct.
Which Spree did you get? I still troll Craigslist daily looking for an '82-83 Urban Express Deluxe (and awesome scooter deals, and trying to dump my overpriced Elite E half-assedly).
@Wheelman-
Took the picture with my mind...didn't think about the phone.
a sidenote to this story:
I got scoot insurance too, now, @$210 with a low deductable and heavy medical coverage for a year, via Statefarm.

Perhaps a brain scan will allow you to reconstruct and post the image?
Ms. Wheelperson and I have a couple of HD Sportster on our bike policy, which is under $200 altogether. Adding the Aero increased the annual premium by a whopping $3.00!
No price change when we switched for the Elite.

How many of yall really get insurance on the little scoots? Around here you don't need it for them. 50cc and under doesn't need insurance, license or plates unless in the city, then you need a moped tag.
