speedometer doesnt read MPH.

Post by jfed1988 »

My speedometer does not show how fast the scoot is going. Everything on the cluster works fine, oil gauge, fuel gauge, high beam light, etc. Everything but the needle. The obvious thing to do would be to replace the speedo cable, however could the cable be fine and somethings wrong with the little hub that the speedo is connected to on the tire? I mean its not really a big deal to just spend the 7 bucks on the new cable, but i would hate to replace it only to find out it wasn't the problem. any ideas.

thanks,
Joe

Greetings:

First, I suggest you disconnect the cable from the speedometer and spin the front wheel on the stand. If the disconnected end turns, the cable and the drive assembly in the hub are probably OK. You may consider grabbing the speedo end of the cable and see if it's really intact or just spinning because of friction between the internally broken
If you can remove the cable completely, spin on end with your fingers and make sure the other spins too.

If the cable's intact and the wheel won't spin it, there's a problem in the worm drive in the wheel hub. I have a serviceable Spree front hub if you need one.
