I recent diagnosed my fuel valve (shutoff) is bad in my 86 aero 50, pull the fuel line, and gas pours out. I know it ran this way for a long time, my question is, what is the purpose of the shutoff valve? and is it ok this way or will I damage something? maybe put in an inline shutoff or visegrips? Thanks

Just make sure your gas tank is completely clean, ...

any other suggestions?

You'd like that part to work properly, but as long as your float shutoff works it will be fine. Keep an eye out for one on Ebay, and change it when you find one.

If you store it, clamp the line with a pair of vice grips and drain the carb. Then it won't refill. Or install an aftermarket fuel shutoff from a lawn and garden store.

how can I tell if my float shutoff works? Also does it matter what size fuel line I use as long as it fits good on the fittings? I know too small is bad, but what about a little bigger? I dont have the original.

If it's not dumping gas on the ground, your shutoff works.
