Noob Spree Rebuild...please help
Alright, i bought an 85 Honda Spree 5 years ago, with a rebuilt engine. No cracks in the panels, in real good condition. Kept up on minor maintenance and drove it my Sr. Year of HS. My little brother snuck it out of the garage over and over again and rode 2 people on it...during this time the kick starter stopped working(springing back and grabbing on the down push) so i used the electric push button start for the remainder of riding the bike.
Then my roommate came back with it from a ride one day and it wouldn't turn off (Run/off switch didnt work) so i had to clip one of lines going into the starter to turn it off......
Currently.....
I have the panels off the bike in my garage, i have pulled the battery, and the crankcase?...to look at the kickstart. It appears as if the first 3-4 teeth on the kick start are stripped. I'm charging the battery. But then i tried to hook the charger straight up to the terminals to just start the bike and try the electric start. It sounds as if its stripped? maybe...sometimes it will try to start the bike and other times it will just whine like its stripped out and moving real fast.
I have bought 3 manules on how to troubleshoot and fix this bike and to try and do it myself....but i know noone who has a scooter who can help.
I will update with pictures often if i can get help with it getting started...and then i will slowly take apart and clean everything i can to make it run better and look nicer..
Please help

Re: Noob Spree Rebuild...please help
the gears have to align when you are tryin to start the spree.... when you hear the whining noise stop tryin to start it. wait a second then try again. they should usually align by the second time.
Re: Noob Spree Rebuild...please help
turning the key off didnt shut the bike down? huh? i dont think there was any reason to cut a wire. yes i agree with lilredspree wait a sec and retry, if nothing, replace bendix maybe starter and those kick start gears. you might try putting that wire back together and see what happens.

ya... odinxxix is right... if your ignition key its self wont turn off the bike then you got some really weird wiring goin on... or no ignition key.
the run/stop switch could have just worn out over the years (i've had one foul out on a past project before). get a new one and throw it on and that should fix that problem. if you want to check to see if it works then put it to the run position and use a voltmeter to see if there is power before and after the switch

you can order a new kick gear online from this site. you can get a new ignition from a guy named taz on this forum, he sells scooter parts on e-bay.

Re: Noob Spree Rebuild...please help
two words for future scooter ownership.
ignition lock.
joy riders don't think too much about anything other than getting to point a from b- regardless the cost to YOU the actual owner.
now then i don't really know what happened to the scoot while it was out of sight- do you? no.
and no one is talking. lock you stuff up next time and you won't hafta clean up the mess.
sorry to bich at you- i hate to see this happen...
having said that-
the kick start system is pretty simple but can be compromised.
little brother probably used a ham fisted (legged) approach to starting it and did some damage to the mechanism within the left engine cover.
not a big deal as long as you are able to take apart/ correct/ re-assemble it.read clean up his mess...
room mate could or not be a victim of circumstance.
yes no maybe.
i suggest you don't loan out the girlfriend or the scooter. pretty much the same thing in my book...
damaged goods...

@ Mookie...Yes. I will never loan out my wife as....i will never loan out my scooter again. I have learned that the hard way(money and frustration)..But the lesson is learned.
@lilredspree...Yeah in the past i remember trying to start it, and the same thing happening. Then moving the bike forward or back and then it starting. Makes since..just been along time and i forgot. Seeing if it was a symptom or if its just the way sprees work. Can i lube up something to fix that problem? or replace it to make work better?
@odinxxix...What is the bendix?
@Portable...thanks for the parts site..i'll check it out.
Yeah, I suppose i didn't need to cut the wire. At the time I wasn't thinking...and i was listening to my roommate tell me what to do. I reattached(crimped) the wires yesterday before i tried to start it. Figured I should start there..(sorry that wasn't in original post)
Should there be black stuff inside of the crank cover? Looks like soot...i would imagine its from the belt. Can i wipe it out? What does it come from? Is it a symptom of a bigger problem. Also, the cover had a plastic gasket..it looked fine...do i need to replace it?
Tommorrow I am going to put in the charged battery, put the crank cover back on and try to start again. I will also get some pictures of everything before i reattach it and try to start everything.
Thanks for you help, current and future.

Re: Noob Spree Rebuild...please help
the bendix is the little gear that is just in front of the drive pulley(front) behind the belt cover,it is attached to the starter, when botton is pushed the starter locks in the bendix and spins the motor. its loose(supposed to be) in side there so if you need to take it out go for it. yes you are correct that the black soot stuff is coming from the belt its normal just wear n tear from the belt being squished inbetween the pulleys and getting warm, you can clean it out and is recommended also do the inside of the pulley case. you can also check out dgy.com for parts. they are reasonably priced.good luck and pics are good!!

So the bendix must be the piece that wants to pop out when I push the electric start and have the cover off....
Re: Noob Spree Rebuild...please help
yep-
take it back out and see if it does its job and while your at it clean it with some brake cleaner and then a squirt of WD40 or eq..
hold the big end with the fine teethed gear.
grab the other gear twist and release the small gear.
did it worm out then in again? it should. it must.
they generally dont wear out but it happens.
like i said clean it good the lube it lightly
won't hurt to add a spooge of grease on either end of where it goes in the case and cover. not too much though.
did you decide why the kicker was misbehaving???

Re: Noob Spree Rebuild...please help
Alright so took the Bindix out, lubed it up and cleaned it off. It looked fine, teeth were solid, sharp and not worn. It spun just as you said Mookie. Had to take off what im assuming was the Flywheel to get it out.
Cleaned up the case cover with break cleaner and put it back on.
Put the battery in and tried to start it. It turned over and had compression, but never acted like it wanted to start. I took off the spark plug and turned it over to see if I was getting a good spark, and the plug appeared to be fouled. Didn't stink like gas, just looked like it had some old gunk on it. So i replaced it. Needless to say i tried the same thing to see if i could get a spark and didnt have the spark plug cover, covering enough and it gave me a good shock.
Installed a new spark plug and tried to turn it over with no better results untill the battery finally went dead. I pulled the plug to see if it was fouling again or if Gas was getting to it, and the plug was clean and didnt smell like Gas...I would assume for as long as i tried to start the scooter that the plug should have had Gas on it. Hmm
stuck again...
here are some pictures of the engine, carb and other stuff. Maybe you will see something you guys dont like and let me know...Also some pictures of the kickstart gear inside of the crankcase.

Front view

side view

the first few teeth from right to left look jacked up....is this the culperate for the kickstart not popin back?

The Bendix, looks good...

Is this the carborator?

Carb picture 2

I cut wire that has the new connector on it to turn it off a few years ago...does it matter which side either of those connectors are hooked to? Because i unplugged them both at one time, they should be hooked up correctly...

well you can laugh but have you got it on run. i couldn't figure out why a scooter wouldn't start one time for 2 weeks, and even didn't do some stuff, but it was messed up anyway, it turned out. what i was wanting to do, i didn't miss out, i would of been broken down.
check the start button. is there a way to bypass it.

Re: Noob Spree Rebuild...please help
@BMX the link you had was incompleate and didnt take me directly to what you wanted to me to see. I found the available parts in the 86 model(i'm assuming there the same)....if you give me the numbers or exact names of the parts i need via that site, that would be alot of help.
My next question is how would i take apart/clean the carb. Can i screw things up? What should i be looking for or at...how do it clean it?

Re: Noob Spree Rebuild...please help
in the pick of your carb the top jet (the one with the phillips= your main mixture) looks like not the stock one, but hopefully it fits properly. there should also be an idle adjustment in the whole right below it... if thats missing that might be your culprit as to why its not starting properly
