I just bought a used scooter a few days ago (88 Honda Elite LX 50cc) and in my first thread here I learned that the distinctive smell I'm... smelling is due to the fact that I have a 2-stroke engine.
I've never owned a scooter in my life so I'm trying to get some good info.

The guy I bought it from said to refill the oil at a thousand miles, but I was reading some other website that was saying fill the oil whenever you put gas in the tank... ?? So, am I supposed to put oil in it whenever i fill it up? That seems weird.

Also, I read something about using Fuchs Silkolene Scoot 2 oil and that it would pretty much cut down on the smell that I've noticed has started to follow me around. Does anyone have any other good suggestions for brands of oil to buy that would cut down on the smell. I do realize now, that that just might be par-for-the-course with owning a 2-stroke scooter, though.

not sure what smell your smelling but may i suggest that IF it is the smell of the internal combustion process and in this case that of a 2 cycle engine
that you take up sky diving as a means of getting from point a to point b.
nothing there to upset your sensitive sense of smell.dang dude take off the skirt scooter guys(and gals) are a hearty breed.try concentrating on, heck i don't know... maybe NOT getting run over by some grey hair or cell phone texting tenny bopper for starters.welcome to Scooterville.

honda gn2 is what most of the guys here on the board run, and it will last a long while, so dont worry about the price. i am going to try some motul when my scoot is rebuilt and ported over the winter. just remember, cheap oil fouls plugs way easier, and that sucks.

you want synthetic 2 stroke injector oil.belray,motul 710,repsol 2t,yamalube 2t,si7 and redline.

Seems to me that our new friend here is not only new to scooters but to anything and everything mechanical; I would advise that it doesn't matter as much what oil you run (as long as it is 2 stroke oil) as never letting that oil tank go empty; the tanks of gas/ tanks of oil ratio differs between models (and I would say between individual scoots as well) so there isn't a rule that anybody can give you as to how often to check your oil. CHECK IT OFTEN! I have never left the house without a spare spark plug or at least a partial bottle of oil. No brainer for us experienced folk, but...A TWO STROKE MOTOR CAN NOT RUN WITHOUT OIL.
And who in their right mind dislikes the smell of a two smoker's puff puff? But I don't want to beat on a new guy.

A full tank of 2-Stroke oil should last about 8-10 tanks of gas, by my calculations. A little light is supposed to illuminate when the oil level gets low, but I submit there's no substitute for direct inspection. Senders can stick.

That distinctive smell turns some guys on. Like Wheelman... He likes it better than his wife's perfume. Some swear by the Honda brand, but do try to stick to a name brand, 2 stroke injector type. Don't run the non-injector type like for chainsaws.

The LX is the precursor to the AF16E series. Less aftermarket but still lots of goodies available. I have an 89LX with 65cc bbk, which is one of our family favorites.

As long as you have most of 10 fingers, and aren't afraid to get some of them pretty dirty at times, gender is irrelevant. For many of us, excessive testosterone can be an impediment to sound judgement and good tuning outcomes. It's the EFS*.

Here I feel the male gender has an advantage. From my experience, most men are much more tolerant of smells than most women. Anecdotally, in the early 70s the Arctic Cat snowmobile company started coating their exhausts with something that gave their sleds a remarkably different aromatic effect. Even with the same fuel and oil, they just smelled ... Different. I wish I could find out more about that stuff.

The manual is the best source for info on how-tos, by far. Just be aware of the occasional typo not caught by the editors. Japanese is hard to translate.
