SA50 upgrades

Post by lilredspree »

I found my motor so now its time to think of upgrade parts.

This is goin on my spree so I'm thinking a 60mph max should be my speed limit.

Found this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-Di ... 2291wt_846

82cc BBK, 28mm carb, V8 exhaust... sounds like a pretty good deal to me for under $600

What I am concerned about is the clutch and variator that are in this set up. Can't recognize them and not sure how good they will be.

On top of that I'm trying to figure out what gearing will put me at my 60mph max. I was thinking 8.4's would put me in the ball park of 55-60...?

Greetings:

The bore kit is made in Taiwan. Some here have had good luck with similar kits. Some hold them in poor regard.

The carb is probably fine for the application.

The variator is Koso, and also should be just fine.

The V8 exhaust is the pricey handmade one, and probably very good in this application.

The electronic parts you can sell on eBay to some unsuspecting victim. :)

toboggan: the 28mm comes in the kit with the bbk, exhaust, variator, clutch, etc.

wheelman: ya, wasn't planning on using the electronics that are included, and i'm sure i can find someone who needs to do some research that will take them off my hands.

should I do around an 8.5 gear ratio to get a top of 60mph?

For the amount of hills and how steep the hill are in seattle area, I would get the 9to1 gears.

i would, on purpose, say this ad is *, and write get a stock honda elite cdi or that it wasn't good made.
well. that guy sells most of that stuff alone. it's just the shipping i guess. there isn't much heavy stuff there. could 9:1 gears keep you at 55-60 up a hill.?

The reason why he sells the kit with the aftermarket cdi is that a jdm dio,the cdi is restricted in alot of ways so you have to change it to a aftermarket one for it to go fast.only the US cdi's are not restricted like the jdm ones.

i'm up in bellingham for school where i keep the scoot. 40mph would be my true max cruising speed, but 60mph would be my ideal top speed.

hill wise there is only a few short steep ones that i go up everyday. i would rather have crazy accel and low end and less top speed. would the 82cc bbk and 8.5's still give me a significant increase in bottom end over a stock sa50 or would 9's be a better idea?

Parts Is Parts

Greetings:

Looked over the eBay ad again. I don't see a Contra spring in the eBay seller's ad, but those are cheap. No knowledge of the clutch pictured. I don't see a Contra spring in the eBay seller's ad, but those are cheap.

Know that the pipe is available from JiangWayne for ?119 + ~$25 shipping. http://www.jiangwayne.com/scooter/p_i.php?i=60
He has the same or very similar bore kit too.
http://www.jiangwayne.com/scooter/p_i.php?i=13 Shipping could be negotiated if you get the pipe as well.
The very good Keli vario from DayWot is $40. Add a ramp plate for maybe another $15 used. Or consider one of JW's:
http://www.jiangwayne.com/scooter/p_i.php?i=215
And we're up to $275
The CT manifold is on sale here from Bakaracer(?) for about $40 and you should be able to source a carb that's at least as good as the eBay seller's for less than another C-Note. Add another $50 for a gearset. (See below) The electronic bits you don't really need, so we're talking about $450, total, even if you don't shop around. Now the eBay kit doesn't seem like such a good deal, unless you consider the convenience of one-click shopping and having all your toys in one box.

The setup described would likely find 9:1s too low - putting the bore at risk for a high-RPM meltdown on the slightest downhill. Remember this isn't an Italian cylinder. :nervous: 8.4 gears at least. If you tune even mediocre, you'll have no trouble with uphills.

:2thumbs: Wheelman

Thats exactly the answers I needed. Looks like I can achieve the same thing cheaper by shoppin around a bit more.

I was leaning towards the 8.4's over the 9's for that exact reason.

I'll work on throwin together a setup on paper and see what you guys think about it.

$120 V8 pipe from http://www.jiangwayne.com/scooter/p_i.php?i=60

$30 Variator and ramp plate http://www.jiangwayne.com/scooter/p_i.php?i=215

$125 24 or 28mm carb/intake/reeds/cable http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-DI ... 1442wt_846

$145 50mm bbk + 17*41 or 15*42 gearing http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-SA ... _500wt_956

That will throw me right around $450. Still would need a good belt obviously, clutch, and a set of roller weights.

What would be a good clutch to put in there?
Should I go with a 24mm or 28mm carby?
