Thanks to everyone for being persistant in telling me that the idle jet was plugged. I had cleaned and recleaned the carb, but obviously wasn't getting the job done right. Anyone have a good suggestion/tool/procedure for getting the idle jet out of the carb for cleaning (next time

You shouldn't remove the idle tube. The pin hole in the top is the only 'jet' there is. Sometimes (as a last resort) use a toothpick (wooden) as it should not enlarge the jet. Try to stick to carb cleaner and compressed air.
