86 spree acceleration issues

I was recently given a spree. When I got it it would top out at around 17-19mph. Now however it will only top out at around 12-14 and that is only downhill. The motor sounds like it is stuttering and when top speed is achieved the motor sounds like it is going to come apart its clanging so bad. I know nothing about these type of engines and would very much like some help. I am going to look at the drive belt and clutch today to see if those are the culprits. How do I make certain that the part is bad before I replace it? Anyone else have any other ideas?

im thinking a rebuild is in your immenint future, sounds like it could be engine bearings IE connecting rod. is there oil in the oil tank under the seat? check the plug it could be really bad fouled. to see if your clutch is bad pull the kick start cover and remove both front and rear pulley. the clutch bell is in the rear. if the pads are half missing or real thin time to replace. i suggest downloading the manual from here http://www.hondaspree.net/phpBB3/viewto ... ?f=11&t=37

this will give you the specs. good luck and keep us posted. oh and welcome.

Can I start my scooter when I take the kick start housing off to see if thats where the noise is coming from?

You could put an impact wrench on the crank nut and spin it to start, but first remove the Bendix before attempting this.
