a little exhaust performance, was it a bad idea?

hello new cyber friends! i recently aquired an 87 Honda Elite 50 and its been running alright. Today I was hoping to gain some performance by freeing up some exhaust flow, but I didn't know what to do. I ended up putting a couple washers on the bolts where the exhaust attaches to the engine and the result was a much louder and slightly faster (2-3mph) scooter.
But is this bad?? What are the potential downfalls of such a primitive mod?

on a 2stroke the engine requires some back pressure. doing a mod such as this may lean out the engine. i reccommend checking the plug. should be a light tan color.

... If you want to free up some backpressure, drill the exhaust around the exhaust outlet with 2-4 holes, 1/4" diam. You'll need about 6" of bit to do it.
Don't continue running it the way you've done it, you're asking for problems.

i reattached the exhaust to normal configuration but it is still idling a bit rough. It doesn't really bother me and maybe it'll smooth itself out a little.

every once in a while when I'm crusing the throttle will just cut out and become completely unresponsive. It then coasts until the engine dies then it takes about 40 minutes of rest to start back up. Might this have anything to do with the spark plug??

That sounds like overheating. Is your oiler working, and fan attached?

I would have no idea if the oiler was working or if my fan was attached?? I'm handy enough to figure stuff out, but I've never worked on cars or motorcycles and I've spent about 5 minutes with this engine thus far.

Is that a statement or a question?
D/l the service manual. Oiler is easy to check, fan is more a matter of making sure the shrouds are in place.

it was meant to be a question- sorry.
Is the engine in the 84-87 spree the same as my 87 elite?? I just want to be sure.

No. The oiler works differently, but the fan's the same. For reference, look at the '85-87 Aero manual, which is pretty close.

Don't drill any holes in that pipe, its not restricted, change the carb jet to a #87 and open up the air intake located on the airbox cover, you will gain some speed.
