Honda Spree and Elite 50 Forums

Still trying to resurrect the 86 Spree... 15 years or so stored outside.
New battery, new fuel, new oil, new spark plug.
With a little coaxing, it'll even start off the electric starter!
However, when I open the throttle all the way up, the engine will go to full revs for about 15 seconds, then just kinda shut off, but slowly. Not like you'd expect it to shut off if the fuel flow were interrupted; it's almost like I'd throttled all the way back, then shut it off. If I catch it in time, I can back off the throttle and it'll keep running.
It'll idle all day, though (much to the neighbor's dismay).
Any suggestions?

it is time to do a good carb cleaning

Mmm, I'm betting the tank's full of rust and/or the in-tank filter is clogging up. It can't fill the carb fast enough so the bowl drains and it dies. Pull off the fuel line at the carb and pull suction on the lower hose of the petcock. If you just get a tiny dribble of fuel out, that's your problem.

If it's in the carb, the passage from the fuel line to the float valve would be clogged.

Turn the fuel mix in either direction untill you get the highest idle, then turn the idle screw for proper idle.
