Honda crankshaft install?

Honda crankshaft install?
Can this be done without the special tool? I seen crankshaft bearings frozen, then dropped into slightly heated case. Is it possiblt to slightly heat crank race with propane, and drop in? Or should I buy the tool to only use once? Anybody ever made one? Thanks for any help.

Re: Honda crankshaft install?
I've put case in oven, bearings in freezer and popped in bearings quickly. *Quickly* is the key. You have microseconds before the bearings expand when they touch the hot case. Promptliness is of the uber utmost importance. Special tools may be nice, but they are not absolutely required.

That exactly how I did it. Works great.
Re: Honda crankshaft install?
And the crankshaft itself? Do I have to freeze it to install pressed end in the bearing? Thanks.
Re: Honda crankshaft install?
I like using the tools, and am too ham-fisted to quickly orient the bearings perfectly for a 'quick' drop-in.

The bearings get knocked/freeze-dropped into the crankcase first. Then the crank gets pulled through the bearing. If you try to hammer it in from the other end, your crank will be at risk of going a-wobble. Get the Honda or Tusk tool or pay the Dealer 1/2 hour to perform that one task. There is no other safe way.And the crankshaft itself? Do I have to freeze it to install pressed end in the bearing?
