Starts cold, runs, hard time restarting when warm.

Post by jsun3thousand »

First, I would like to thank everyone that has provided any information to this website. I have spent many hours on this site and have gone from knowing nothing to feeling fairly competent talking about my spree.

I just recently installed a 44mm bbk from Taz. My spree starts from cold just fine and runs better than it ever has. The acceleration is amazing. My problem is that it is almost impossible to start when the engine is warm. This defeats the reason I got my scooter, which was to be my main commuter around town.
When the engine is warm it sounds like it wants to start but never does. The more I attempt to start it when warm, the further it sounds from starting.

Spree stats:

Cold compression 116
Warm compression 110
The plug chop is good
Running 30:1 pre-mix during the break-in
Installed the jet that came with the bbk
Carb was cleaned before the install
It starts and runs with or without the cover on the airbox when cold.
About 20 miles into the break-in. Never gone over 20, no WOT, and no long trips.

All suggestions and comments are welcomed. If I'm doing something wrong, I want to know. Jason

Fatten up you idle mixture screw an 1/8th of a turn at a time, until it starts warm.

FYI, your compression should be higher warm than cold, something isn't right.

I'll double check the compression tomorrow.

Also, when you are trying the warm start, have you tried giving it just a little throttle. My 1985 requires that in the warmer weather or when it has been run hard and I do a short shut off time.

Warm compression is 120. It started cold no problem twice today. I turned the idle screw and gave it gas, like suggested, but couldn't get it to start warm.

Can you elaborate on the reason behind this? I feel i have the same problem with my scooter. Why is it so hard to restart?

For a bit i thought it was a bystarter issue, but i'm not sure that's the case

For a hot start the bystarter is not doing anything to help with the start.

As to cracking the throttle slightly. A hot motor contains hot air which is very thin compared to cold air. Hence your engine may be rich (why there is no need for the bystarter on hot starts) and, the cold air leans it out and allows for an easier starter.

If your engine does not want to start hot, even with the throttle cracked then there maybe a vacuum leak or a low float bowl setting.

Would the fact that I'm running 30:1 premix and have a hot engine be causing my restart problems?

Maybe, what jet are you running?

Is the condenser located in a spot where it gets hot? Have you tried swapping it out?

What condenser might you be talking about and what is it suppose to be doing?
