'84 Iowa Spree - Steering lock not working

Hi everyone.

I searched in the archives, but couldn't find anything relevant to my problem. Apologies if this has been covered.

I recently acquired an '84 Iowa Spree that's in great shape, but I haven't been able to engage the steering lock that is supposed to be there. I've tried turning the wheel to the left (and the right), pushing the key, jiggling the key, etc. The key easily turns to that lock position, and can be removed from there, but the wheel doesn't lock.

It's a bit of a problem, because the bike can be pushed indefinitely from wherever I park it.

Thanks for any thoughts, experience, or advice.

You should be able to lock it turning to the left.

Wiggle the bars back and forth from extreme left turn while turning the key to the lock position.

Buy a cable lock. The scooter weighs ~100lbs a steering lock isn't gonna stop much more than the average 2nd grader.
